I bought this car while I was in college with my GI Bill money for $6000. It was an SR5, V6, 4wd, AC, pwr window/locks, sunroof and manual transmission. It had 145k on the odometer. I have had it for 40k and it has does everything I need it to do from moving my stuff, road trips, camping excursions, to just getting me to my job dependably. It's not fast and it's not fuel efficient. However, it is as reliable as gravity and as rugged as a Jeep. I don't plan on ever getting rid of this vehicle. It's just too reliable to let go even with the crappy gas mileage.
Be aware that if you purchase one, just like every other used car, some parts will eventually go bad after 100k miles plus. That's just the rules of physics working. My starter went at 160k. Drivers side front wheel bearing at 167k. Cooling fan pulley bracket (looks like a water pump but it's not) 174k.
After spending endless hours learning about the 4runner I suggest the following:
If you are in the market for a reliable do everything vehicle buy a pre-96 4runner w/4wd, manual transmission and the 4cylinder 22re motor. They are among the most coveted configuration of the 4runner when it comes to overall performance and capability. The reasons are pre-96 have more durable frames. You will want the 4wd option in an SUV. Manual transmission has better mileage and performance than automatic transmission which is HUGE considering how dismal it actually is overall. And the V6 is barely an upgrade over the smaller 4 cylinder which has a lot more aftermarket performance options.
