When I drove my first Thunderbird Super Coupe back in 1993, I wasn't exactly a huge fan of that car. The SC may have been fast, but it was big, offered a ho-hum chassis and suspension, plus the T-Bird offered only marginal levels of refinement. Nevertheless, the Thunderbird SC, with 230 HP and 330 lb-ft of torque, was finally able to compete with Chevrolet's Monte Carlo in the performance department.
Driving Impressions :
While the regular T-Birds received only a 140 HP V6, the SC gets a Supercharged version of that V6, which gives plenty of power to rival most V8 powered cars of the mid '90s. When shifting through the gears, the T-Bird SC is reminiscent of the muscle car's that my father used to drive. Through the turns, the T-Bird SC remains planted, but thanks to the SC's fairly slow steering and 3,500lb girth, considerable driving skill is needed for fast cornering.
The T-Bird was redesigned from the ground up for 1989 (made Motor Trends car of the year), and built on a new platform called Mn12. The
suspension set-up was revised, with short-long arm coil sprung units up front and a fully rear independent rear axle. The Super Coupe comes with beefy springs and gas pressurized shocks, plus 4 wheel disc brakes for some great stopping power. These brakes make this heavy-weight stop with confidence. The 4-wheel discs are a nice addition to this car, as the brakes in the regular T-Birds seem to need an exaggerated amount of pedal pressure to stop.
Interior Accommodation :
The
interior of the T Bird is very roomy. Ford has equipped the '95 models with relatively well made leather, good ergonomics, plenty of amenities, plenty of trunk room, plenty of room for adults in the back seat, and adequately bolstered front seats for aggressive driving. The instrument panel is very easy on the eyes, at night it reads like a children's story book. The only gripe I have with this interior is that the dash does seem a little dated for a '95 model. The steering wheel is thick; a compliment to the car's wide exterior. Because the '95 SC is equipped with power everything, you don't have to stretch across the car each time you need to let your friends in; this was a problem with some of the base model T-Birds.
Exterior Innovation :
The SC looks more like a grocery getter than the muscle car that it is. There is simply nothing aggressive about this 2 door coupe or anything to hint that its sporting more power than your typical large sedan. Needless to say, this car is a real sleeper. The T-Bird Super-Coupe comes with sporty body/ground effects to segregate this sports model from the lesser counterparts.
Pricing :
Price: Once, almost 26 Grand, the '95 T-Bird Super Coupe can now be had for around 2-5K; a great bargain basement value coupe. With an EPA of almost 25 MPG highway you also won't get suck paying super high gas bills.
Final Thoughts :
The 1995 T-Bird SC may not offer the performance of some of the sedans we have today, i.e. the 2005 V6 Nissan Maxima, however the Super Coupe is definitely worth a test drive if you are on the market for a large coupe with muscle car intentions.
