Quick, speedy. unique - but requires a lot of care!

Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Sporty, unique, quick, sharp, reliable
Cons: Seals are troublesome, two seats only
The Bottom Line: I absolutely recommend this car for any young adult looking to get into import cars - it's cheap and troublefree.

I have owned three Honda Civic del Sols in my lifetime, and I recommend them highly to young adults looking for a sporty, yet unique car. The Honda Civic del Sol is "The Civic of the Sun" in Spanish, and comes with a targa top that is removable and stows away in the trunk when not in use - so you can get some wind in your face and sun on your shoulders!

The del Sol has all the mechanical sturdiness of the Honda name (everyone knows how strong Japanese engines are, right?) with a shorter wheelbase and a two-seat cockpit. The seats are very sporty and are not meant to be ultra-comfortable, but will suffice for short-to-mid-range trips (up to five hours, I'd say).

The del Sol came in three models: The S, the Si, and the VTEC. The S is the base model with a 100 hp engine (D16A), the Si is the mid-range model with a 130 hp engine (D16Z), and the VTEC is the top-end model with a DOHC 160 hp engine (B16A, the glory of all Honda engines - also found in the 2000 Civic Si). The VTEC was available from 1994-on, while the other two models were available from 1993-1997. I highly suggest that you own a VTEC model - not just because of the power, but because of the superior brakes (dual-discs), better options inside the cockpit, and the more flexibility with modifying your car for performance reasons in the future (if that's a concern). VTEC del Sols are tough to come by, but I suggest you purchase one from a snowless area like Florida or Southern California. The reasons for this are two-fold: No rust, and the seals that hold water and debris out from the cockpit and meet with the targa top have a tendency to wear out and need replacing. That is NOT cheap ($600+), so make sure that the seals are inspected and working perfectly before you purchase.

This car is amazing and gets great looks from all around you. Make sure you treat it well, change the oil every 3,000 miles with a good synthetic (I recommend Mobil-1), and use premium gas (91+ octane in the VTEC, 89+ octane in the S or Si).
