OK, I have had a bazillion cars, and have worked in a garage before, so here goes:
I currently own a 1996 Grand Cher Ltd. It's nice and plush, but still is a total workhorse, and it hardly cost me anything compared to MOST SUVs, especially NEW ones!
With over 180K miles, it is up there, but is still running fine. Jeeps can really go for 200-300K miles, if you know what to watch.
1 -- As with ANY SUV or full-time AWD, you will have to pay attention to tire rotation, and when you replace tires, they are a bit more than a 2X car, PLUS you need to get 4 at a time, usually. Something for the non 4X folks to consider.
2 -- The V-8 as with any, will EAT gas. Be prepared.
3 -- The Chrysler Jeeps take an odd trans fluid, and it isn't always easy to find. Add to that that the tranny in a 1996 or 1997 is the weak link, and it's just something to check REALLY WELL before buying this Jeep.
I'd ALWAYS reccomend a Carfax or other lemon report, and of course go to your mechanic and get an engine compression and general safety test before you buy ANY used car. Sorry if I'm being redundant for some folks, but not too many chix out there used to work at a Service Station!
Other than that, this is a stable, safe, and reasonably priced vehicle that (if you check first to make sure it is sound) could take you around town in comfort for a good long time.
It looks good, handles well, and has both the power and clearance any urban or suburban 4X driver could ever want. AND I must say, it's the ultimate for long road trips. You can pack in the people AND the gear for the long haul, and no one 6' and under will be too cramped, even in the back seat!
