I just turned my 1996 Jetta back in and I couldn't be happier. The disappointment started before I even drove off the lot. After all the paperwork had been done for my green Jetta, it turned out they had no green ones. I had to settle for black. From there it just gets worse.
The black trim on the passenger and driver doors came off before the first year was up. It was starting to drag the road, so I had to rip it all the way off. I did fix it, but at my own expense.
It drives like a box and the motor is loud. The steering was power, but I doubted that at times.
There is no glove compartment.
The cup holders are useless. They only hold small sodas from fast food restaurants and canned drinks.
To recline the seats you have to turn a round crank. This is especially annoying if you have a baby or small children and you need to reach in the back seat at a stoplight. I was always needing to fish a dropped pacifier to calm a crying baby, and the crank style recline feature did not make this an easy or quick job. I also did not find the seats to be very comfortable. I traveled quite a bit and my back always hurt when I drove for more than an hour.
There is no light in the trunk. This bothered me every time I had to get out/put in the stroller at night. Also when I would travel and reach my destination after dark, I couldn't see to get my suitcase and other items out of the trunk.
This car does have a couple of good points I suppose. It never broke down on me. It got good gas mileage. And I did like the day running lights. And that covers the good points in a nutshell!!
Oh and one last thing. If you do decide to buy one, don't use Volkswagon Credit. They aren't pleasant to deal with either...but that is a whole other epinion!!
