Just picked up a '97 coupe with 60K miles for $18,500. No repairs to speak of. With the new E46 M3 coming out in 2001, the price on the older E36 (1995-99) has fallen a bit. Now the only thing you have to worry about is how much it costs to insure one of these rockets.
This is my first BMW and I must say that it will not be my last. The handling is superb. It's almost as if the car corrects the mistakes of an average driver and lets you feel like a pro.
I have added an aftermarket cold air intake and a performance chip, but other than that the car is stock. A stock M3 can smoke 95% of the cars on the road anyway so if you are looking for something that is hot out of the box this is your car.
The styling is the same as the other 3-series from the same year, but the M3 has larger rims, and ground effects, making it look sportier. Other than that, there really isn't much except for the M3 badge on the truck to distinguish this from some sucker's 318. This can work to your advantage because it does not scream give me a ticket like a Corvette or a Porsche.
