Sticking up for the Neon

Pros: Price, performance, style, warranty, service
Cons: Reliability, style?

I spent a lot of time on the 'Net before finally deciding on the Neon as my next car. I have actually had my Neon for over a year, and I so have become familiar with its personality enough to elaborate on its good and bad points.

First I must mention that my Neon is a 4-door Sedan model, with the lowest trim level possible. It has a standard transmission. Keep these things in mind as you read this review.

What I was looking for at the time of this purchase was a good price to specifications ratio. Essentially, how much car am I getting for my money?

I compared the Neon with several other models (compact cars) from other companies. In general, I found the Neon compared very favorably in almost all aspects. For example, in almost all comparisons, I found that the Neon was a heavier vehicle, had a wider wheelbase, more horsepower, and more room inside. There were a few vehicles that bested the Neon in some of these areas, particularly the Sunfire and Cavalier come to mind. However, I found the Neon to be priced much lower at the time.

Current specifications for the 1999 models are as follows:

4 cylinder engine
132 Horsepower at 6000 RPM
129 ft-lbs. of torque at 5000 RPM
2400 lbs.
104 inch wheelbase

In comparing these specs today with other current models in the same class, it is evident that the Neon still has an edge on power and performance, but appears to have lost its advantage in weight and wheelbase.

The Neon is a zippy vehicle to drive. The weight/power ratio gives it one of the best 0-60mph acceleration times in the book (at 8.8 seconds) - outclassing even the more powerful Honda Accord (9.5 seconds).

Safety ratings are classed average to good for this vehicle, and insurance costs have been fairly low. It seems, though, that they went up a tad when the new models were introduced for 1999.

The Neon prices in at about $3k less than the Accord. This puts it at about $11.5k in US curreny, MSRP. It's about $1k less than the Cavalier. So in general, you'll find the Neon is the most economic -- at least at the dealership. The Neon has an average 12.5 gallon gas tank, and gets around 29 mpg in the city.

I have no complaints with my Neon. It has given me no mechanical problems at all. I was able to get a 7 year, 70k mile warranty with the vehicle that covers the engine, powertrain, etc. The Chrysler Customer One program is also excellent if you should ever come in need of service while on the road. These are good bonuses, given the reported reliability concerns with the vehicle. Perhaps the only downside I have come across yet are the stories from other Neon owners who have had mechanical problems. I can't vouch for them, however, as my experience has been quite pleasant. I am convinced that under a proper maintenance schedule and prudent driving habits that the Neon will provide excellent reliability.

Still, for those of you who are used to high quality Japanese imports -- you will find it difficult to convince yourself to try the Neon.
