Previously, I owned a 97 4x4 Offroad F150...loved it dearly. Then I thought I'd update myself by getting a 99 of the same type/options but in a black. It was a 1999 F150 XLT Off-Road, Standard Cab, Step Side, 4.8 ltr w/towing package.
TROUBLES -
From day one, that truck was nothing but trouble. It continually leaked water through the window seals (side and rear), began splitting at the weld on the door, electrical shorts, etc. Even a month after ownership, I noticed something strange along the door/front driver side panel. It had been wrecked!!! The dealer wouldn't acknowledge it, and I could find no record,...but I've worked auto-body long enough to spot a pro-job.
In time, water poured in on my feet through the brake pedal and the electronics in the dash, horn, and lights failed.
Even with the full and extended warrantee, only certain things were covered...and the estimate for my part was 1,200!
Through www.F150online.com, I noticed that there were many owners who experienced some of the same things...and some that didn't. I guess it depends on which plant it was made...on which day.
My gas mileage was what I expected....14/18.
ON A POSITIVE NOTE:
I must say that this truck did have a "Cadillac" style ride...comfy, plush seats and very little roll in the corners. The ergo of the dash was very simple and convenient. The 4.8 ltr loved to run fast!
What drew me to the F150 in the first place is the looks....very aggressive, but with smooth lines. Ford did a good thing by finally going a different direction when it came to trucks...and the other automakers followed suite.
END RESULT
Needless to say, though the truck looked darned good going down the road, I just couldn't put up with the mechancial problems and the aggravation of dealing with the service department. I had to trade it in...in fact, both my Fords, and moved on to another manufacturer.
Amount Paid (US$): 18,000
