I bought my "baby SUV" in 2001. Since then, the only problem I have had with it is the battery. I had to replace the battery twice since I got it, but i'm guessing that's more the dealership I took it to's fault than the truck.
I got it because of it's size. I needed something that I could easily take on archeological expeditions as well as go into the heart of the District with and actually park. I have never had a problem parking unlike some larger SUV's. With larger trucks, the spaces all seem to be too small. With the RAV4, it fits perfectly.
It's also very very easy to steer. I have managed to get out of a Mississippi football parking area with only an inch give on either side without hitting anyone and I went through a ditch. (For those that have never been to a Mississippi football game, people tend to box you in making escape immpossible. The fact I managed escape was amazing)
I've also managed to pack it full for college with my papazan chair tied to the ski rack on top. You can really stuff the car up with tons of stuff. It has also survived Mississippi mud puddles, my dog, and a couple of fender benders with only a scratch.
My brothers also love my truck and my Dad has even "kidnapped" it on an occasion or too. I've managed to fit seven kids in it before (just going from the top of the hill to my house, not long distance!). Normally, I can comfortably fit five people in it as long as they aren't too tall.
The only problem I've really had is that it sounds like a door might be open if you go a bit fast in the rain. You can hear the "swichsing" through the puddles very clearly. It's just a bit unnerving the first few times you drive it in the rain.
