I've had a 2000 Windstar LX for about 2 years, and just rolled over 50K miles on it. The first 18 months were worry free, and I was actually liking the minivan. (It's a lot cooler that our station wagon) We also own a 1994 Mercury Sable LS wagon.
Funny thing is, both cars have the same Tranny and 3.8L engine. Hmm, our 1994 wagon, with 125K miles, has had it's transmission rebuilt twice! The first time by Ford mechanics, the second time by a local shop. (Yeouch!)
The Windstar van is starting to exhibit the same transmission issues the Sable had. It hesitates when shifting from Neutral to 1st, and also has a lurch when shifting from 1st to 2nd.
If you haven't guessed by now, I'm pretty darned burned out on Ford. I can't afford to rebuild the van's transmission, it's going to be $2,500! And the warranty only lasted 36,000 miles!
I can't believe Ford put a known BAD tranny in an even bigger vehicle that a Sable.
Worse yet, I can't believe that I TRUSTED Ford to have fixed their problems.
Guess what Ford? I'm dumping my mini-van and wagon, and will be buying HONDA! I've never had a problem with the 3 Hondas I've owned, so guess what! Bye Bye.
