Even though the Jimmy was the first SUV that I ever drove, I feel that my opinions might be helpful to someone perhaps thinking about going from a sedan to a Jimmy. I got the 2000 Jimmy as an insurance replacement recently when my Honda Accord went in the shop. The vehicle only had about 6500 miles on it and I drove it for almost a month.
The Jimmy is one beautiful car. You really do feel like royalty stepping behind the wheel of one. It feels amazingly car-like but rides a bit rough and noisy for it's size. Whenever you hit a bump it feels like you're in a Jeep cause you literally bounce up and down. All of the luxurious features one would expect were in place and I was satisfied with the car itself.
The reasons why I wouldn't buy a Jimmy? There are only a few. First of all the price of one is much too inflated. You could buy two good reliable vehicles for the price of one Jimmy. Which brings me to reason number two. Gas mileage is ridiculous. While I had it, I voluntarily took every opportunity there was to walk or take public transportation. The third reason is safety at high speeds. I just did not feel very safe in this car accelerating, making sharp turns, and on the expressway. It even comes with a warning (on the visor) about the high-rollover rate which didn't help my safety fears.
But for a rental, it was great! Overall, I think that the Jimmy is a good vehicle that perhaps would be good for a growing family (with a generous bank account of course). Families with speed loving teens, a tight budget, or who are environmentally concious might want to stay away.
