LEMON CAR

by jkerm: Written: Oct 01 '04

Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: It seats 7 people
Cons: Just about everything you can think of. Lemon lemon lemon GMC needs better mechanics
The Bottom Line: Stay clear of this van...too many problems and no real help....even GMC trained mechanics aren't much help!

The word LEMON could be defined as a "GMC Safari Van". The words Money Pit could be defined as a "GMC Safari Van". Need I say more? We bought this pile of junk used. It was clean and it "appeared" to be a solid car. However, we have spent a small fortune keeping it running and we plan to trade it soon.

Problems to watch for:

1. Every pump has had to be replaced. The gas pump, the oil pump, the power steering pump.....you name it we've replaced it.

2. The air conditioning: After we paid $1,000.00 to replace the FRONT air conditioner, the back one went out. The mechanic took out the back one and told us to just run the front one because it would be very expensive to replace the back one. After 6 months, the fan shorted out. Sometimes it will blow out cold air and sometimes it won't. My daughter thinks it has something to do with driving uphill, however, this theory cannot be proven. The fan won't work on high At anytime, up hill down hill or driving straight into the horizen.

3. The engine whines.....the mechanic told us to "live with it".....now the mechanic we use is a certified GMC mechanic through the GMC dealer. This isn't a fly by night roadside mechanic but a GMC trained MASTER mechanic!

4. The CD player works occasionally as long as you don't drive over a bump.

5. The driver window sticks. Stressful situation, because you never know if the window will roll back up. Generally, after you stop for awhile it will, but it's still really iffy.

6. Be prepared to feed it lots and lots of gas. It's hungry ALL of the time and so we all fight for the smaller cars because they are gas efficient. This thing needs a loan to just run a few errands. (Yes, we have had many a tune-up)

7. Comfort......if you are riding in the front passenger seat, cross your legs because there is the room of a shoe box for your feet. The driver's side is okay. There isn't much leg room for the bench seats either.

8. Spare tire.....oh my God! If you do have a flat and you will, pray it isn't while you are dressed for any kind of occasion. The spare tire is bolted underneath the car. We keep ours in the back of the van which takes up half of the storage space. But it is better than crawling under the car and spending an hour trying to dislodge the spare from rusted bolts.....think about it......water, dirt, weather is splashed up under the car......thus making a mess out of the contraptions under it.

9. There is nothing convenient about this van. The drawer under the passenger seat is shallow and open at the back so that you may find your important papers laying in the back seat. They used nets as storage, although they are flexible, it can still be messy. The cup holders are shallow and the larger cups fall out.

10. The side door sticks and doesn't easily roll open. The handle on the backdoor is cracked but not really worth the price to replace it.

We needed a family car to transport our large family (this van seats seven people), but this is has been an expensive NIGHTMARE!
