2000 GMC Safari

Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Front & rear AC. Strong V-6 engine with pick up and GO!
Cons: Poor leg room for front passenger. Cd player is in a very bad spot!
The Bottom Line: I would highly recommend this van to anyone who wants's reliable transportation with major pick up and go

General Vehicle Information:

The 2000 GMC Safari is an amazing mini-van. Plenty of space with both bench seats removable. Two captains’ chairs for upfront. One draw back so far is that the front passenger captains chair, even with the seat all the way back, is cramped for long legged people. The second draw back the CD Player is right where the front drink holders are. So far I have spilled sodas and coffee in there, and it still works like normal.

The engine specs are: 4.3L. V6; 190 horsepower. The fuel tank is 27.0 gallons and that gets me an average of 450 miles to a tank. Automatic transmission with overdrive.

It has speed-compensated volume control: meaning that the volume will automatically get higher when your gaining freeway speed and will lower itself when you get into slower speeds in town. Way too cool. I won't tell you that it took me 5 months to realize this.

Another great feature is the lockout prevention. Do you know that in all this time I have never locked my keys in the van! Why, because you can not lock the doors with the keys in the ignition. (YEAH. I am one of those gals, who are always waiting for AAA to come unlock my doors. I was able to kiss AAA goodbye since I have owned this van. Also the slider side door has an option when opened to be child-lock safety. Meaning when set you is not able to open from the inside.)

The next great feature is automatic headlights! You can manually shut them off but when you restart the car they will automatically be on again. Where I live you have to have your headlights on while driving during the daytime too. So this has been nice not ever having to remember the lights. Great when you get where you are going during the day and the lights shut off automatically as well so no dead battery.

Okay the next one is the Tow/Haul feature. This is used to help the engine when you are towing or hauling. It will reduce the frequency of shifting gears when pulling a trailer. It will make the van drive just like it does when it is not pulling anything.

Driver's seat has a lumbar option. As well as power seat. The passenger captain's chair is manual. Ours is fully loaded with the exception of the rear heat and leather package. The vans accessory and options vary according to RPO (regular production option) listed on each model. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Tune up isn't necessary until 100,000 miles. Normal driving habits. Oil changes should be every 3,000 or 3 months.

Just My 2-Cents:

The van has a lot of compartments. Some are open, but most are lid covered. Perfect for kid's toys, Lego's and drinks. Jessica's highlight is that her Game Boy bag fits easily in the covered compartments. Speaking of drinks, you know how all the fast food places have different size cups, no problem here. There is a removable sizer in the front drink holders. The sizer holds in the smaller cups, remove it and there's space for the 7-Eleven Big Gulps!

With proper maintenance this will be a perfect mini-van for any family up to 8. Very accommodating to families with children has Velcro belt adjusters. Also fine for car seats. I have had up to four car seats in there one being the infant, two full size boosters, and one regular booster. Getting the larger car seats in the back is an art.

When on the highway the van gets awesome gas mileage, even in town. So far we are getting 16-18 miles to the gallon in town and around 18-22 on the Hwy. An added bonus to the driver is that the entire console it directed at you. Meaning instead of a flat console the console is at an angle. There is housed the air/heat controls as well as the radio. The CD player is under the radio and right behind the front driver and passenger drink holders. The optional rear AC and rear heat control is here as well. Within a few months you can easily fumble with any button or control without ever having to look. Also the computer above you is within easy reach. The computer tells you direction, outside air temp., miles left in the tank {my favorite}, and your average speed. Perfect to show to cop when you get pulled over. Who was speeding? Not me.

I have had this van 2 years in July, it now has almost 30,000 miles on it. I am getting an average of 450 miles on a full tank. I drive 20 minutes on the Hwy. just to get to town and so there is 40 Hwy. miles just in one day. The maintenance has been kept up and I have had no out of pocket expenses so far besides the regular oil changes and other filters. The driving to town has put the majority of miles on my van, except for one trip to El Paso Texas from Central California. It was wonderful. The van gave us not one single hiccup. I was so happy. The tires are still original and no sign of a new purchase in sight. As long as the alignment is set correctly, rotation of the tires every 6,000 miles and proper tire pressure is maintained you should not have to replace the tires until 35K-40K miles.

The warranty has been used a lot in this year. The door molding has warped and the rear left speaker blew within a few weeks. But that was my fault, however it was replaced free. The door panel warped with the high heat from my area. All in all the engine and transmission is solid as a rock. The only annoying things have been cosmetic.

:) Enjoy your new or used GMC Safari SLE
