You See These Everywhere For a Reason

by jei_aguinaldo: Written: Aug 17 '07

Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Reliable, Dependable, Smoothe, Fuel Efficiency. It's a Honda! What else do you need to know?
Cons: The fact that Honda Civics lead the list of most stolen vehicles in the U.S.
The Bottom Line: You see Civics everywhere for a reason and that reason is the fact that hard not to like.

I have owned two of these 2000 Honda Civics within a year. The two models I have owned are the 2000 Civix EX Coupe and the 2000 Civic Si Coupe. Many similarities between the two models, however, the SI is just one of a kind.

After owning a Mitsubishi Eclipse for 6 years, I realized that I was forcing myself to love my car simply due to the fact that it was "my car". I used to not care about Honda's and stereotyped them as the typical rice rocket. Before you knew it, my Eclipse wass turning into a rice rocket with its body kit, "stadium-bench" style wing, LED lights all over the inside of the car, and ebay coilovers. After about 6 years of owning the car, two of my best friends bought 1998 Honda Civic EX's and after riding in their cars, I just fell inlove with the feel of them. I ended up trading my 1998 Eclipse RS (Auto) straight up for a 2000 Civic EX (manual) and that's where my honda crave first started.

2000 Honda Civic EX

My first impression of the car was "Wow, this thing is smoothe!" I understood why people were so loyal to their Hondas and why they were so popular. The handling of the Civic was just flatout superb compared to my 98 Eclipse. Acceleration just felt more confident and the V-Tec was a fun feature, or asset, to have. I drove the car as it was, absolute stock for about 6 months before doing some major upgrades to it. The car was very quiet when driving and the comfortability of the seats were uncomparable to those of the Eclipse. I absolutely loved this car. The vehicle had a clean title, I got it from the original owner, and it had about 82,000 miles on it when I picked it up in 2006. I fell inlove with Hondas just seconds after picking up the 2000 Civic EX. I don't want to go into details about the other Civic models but the EX has an excellent feel, cold blowing air conditioning, power windows, a nice moonroof (something the Eclipse didn't have), a factory alarm, and a decent sound system. The factory speakers and stereo aren't something to rave about, but atleast it says "Honda" on it. The clutch and the transmission wasn't hard to maintain and the only word I can use to describe this vehicle is "SMOOTHE".

The only negative about owning a Honda Civic is the fact that you are at high-risk of having your car stolen. If you didn't know already, Honda Civics are at the top of the list in most stolen vehicles about every year. These cars are "hot", especially if your car looks all pretty or "pimped out". Sadly, I had to find this out personally on February 13, 2007, when my 2000 Civic EX was stolen from me while taking a test at my college. You see, if someone wants your Honda, they'll take it. To prevent theft, I purchased a $500 Hornet alarm system w/ LCD remote, a Club, and a Pedal Jack. All of this was no help as my car was stolen within 2 hours. However, all things happen for a reason...

As I was looking for another car to replace my Civic EX, I started my doubt about Hondas and decided to get something else through insurance claims. Initially I had thought about getting a nice BMW, Mercedes, Lexus IS300, Lexus GS300, Toyota Celica, or a Range Rover... In the end, I ended up missing my Civic so much that I bought a 2000 Civic SI, which leads me to my next review.

2000 Honda Civic SI

These Si's are hot for a reason, I test drove this Honda Civic SI just "for fun" and simply becaused I missed my Honda Civic... It was the same color as my Civic EX and looked identical to it except that it had nicer 15" factory wheels, a front bumper lip, fog lights, a couple additional emblems and badges on the exterior, a better looking interior, and most importantly, a bigger engine.

After driving this car, I fell inlove all over again... it was similar to that feeling when you find yourself so inlove with someone and next thing you know, you two break up. After time, you want to get in a relationship again and sometimes you end up changing your mind because there's a particular something you can't see in a person that absolutely makes you fall "IN-love". You were inlove with someone from the past for a reason. How that relationship fell apart can vary. However, sometimes you want to be in a relationship similar to that of the past for the good reasons, minus the heart aches. That was my reasoning with this Civic SI. Although I knew this car was "hot", there was just too much I missed about my Civic that made me end up wanting to buy one just like it with added benefits. These added benefits are the 160hp DOHC engine, the front fog lights, the front lip, the "SI" badge at the rear, the amber interior lighting, leather steering wheel and shift knob, that front factory strut bar, the nice feeling suspension with the longer rear sway bar, the four wheel disck brakes, and for me, the leather seats =). Most SI's don't come with leather seats or foglights, so those two were my added benefits. This car made me forget about my 2000 Civic EX and was just on another level. Sure they may look almost the same but no, nah-uh, they're not.

Overall, the 2000 Civic SI is a highly recommended vehicle if you can still find one. These cars aren't too common especially if you're looking for one with a clear title. If you're in the market for one with a clear title, then good luck. Also, you feel like its a liability to have one because of the fact that these cars are so sought after by thiefs. For me, I keep my vehicle at a local auto shop garage and I rarely drive it. If its worth the risk to you and you don't plan on leaving your vehicle for long interval times then go get it. This is also a great daily driver / weekend track car to own. The potential of the Civic SI is seemingly limitless.

Conclusion:

With each car, you can't go wrong. If you have an extra couple grand laying around and you can afford an SI, I would get it while you can especially if it has a clear title. Clear Title Si's are becoming obsolete because most of them have salvage titles from being stolen or branded titles from being in car wrecks. As with all Honda Civics, they don't have a strongly built exterior so be careful with how you drive in one. I know it is easy to get excited while driving one but please control your pleasure. If you haven't owned a Honda before, you will definitely appreciate the 2000 honda Civic. Honda's have a reputation for a reason, they are dependable, reliable (many Honda cars i've seen last well over 200,000 miles and keep on going), smoothe, have potential as a track car, and are perhaps one of the best daily drivers out there.
