Small Family Car for Small Families

by The_Director: Written: Jun 29 '05

Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Excellent mileage. Good maintenance record. No frills, but comfortable and economical ride.
Cons: Not too roomy. Sits low to the ground, so entry is from a squatting position.
The Bottom Line: Buy one if your needs are economy and a little cargo space. 'Round town and shopping excursion users will love this car!

In today's economy of high gas prices and low salaries, economy of transportation is a fundamental need. Most Saturn cars will satisfy this need with a little style to boot. Little, however, seems to be the operative word until you reach the SUV or mini-van realm.

If you have a small family, or if you travel long distances on sales trips, this little gem of a used car might be just what you need. They (the 2000-2001 model years) can be purchased for less than $10,000 in most areas. If maintenance has been performed regularly they make a really nice second car. Definitely check out the CarFax report... as damage on a vehicle of this size can really affect performance in unexpected ways.

As with most Saturns, maintenance is infrequent, no major recall issues that I know of, and not too expensive. The vehicle sits low to the ground, so watch out for road hazards. There is adequate clearance, but you are sitting close to the ground so whatever you hit may find its way into the car with you!

I had a few moments of anxiety transitioning to this (my wife's car) from my own Jeep 4x4. The difference in my seated position is over 3 feet lower, and the intimidation factor is considerable. Pulling up behind an H2, for instance, you may be tempted to just drive on through and come out in front of him at a stop light. Fight this urge... please.

The factory air in our Saturn SW cools excellently. Perhaps too excellently sometimes. At full cool, the air will freeze out the front passenger and driver while the back seats are just getting comfortable. The shoulder to shoulder size of the car seems to get in the way of airflow, and Saturn engineers might have considered adding a channel directly to the rear seating area. Perhaps the transmission got in the way...

Our 2000 Saturn SW averages 30+ mpg city and 40ish highway. Not bad for the cargo hauling mini-stationwagon configuration. There is room for about 3 full size suitcases or 5 day bags in the back. Don't plan on any additional space for items between the kids in the back seat, however. And never plan for 5 people, large or small, to fit in the car unless one of them takes a chance in the hatchback.

For long trips, pack light. For long trips with gear... take the other car. For a single traveling salesman with samples and a few changes of clothes, plan on impressing the boss with all the money you save on gas!

Our Saturn has:
- manual windows (I recommend power if available).
- remote locks and anti-theft (always recommended)
- no cruise control (really needed on trips - we may add an aftermarket one soon... review to follow)
- CD/Cassette combo factory stereo (really nice sound)
- factory air (excellent cooling power)
- minimal annunciator lights (I prefer gauges for most engine functions)
