Toyota's Camry has been a best-seller for the past few years, and with good reason: it's simply an outstanding car for its class, and also a very good value.
Camry model choices can be a little overwhelming, from the base CE model starting in the high teens to a loaded XLE that comes mighty close to 30 grand. Not to worry...Camry's essential goodness is available in all models in the range.
We recently took delivery of a 2000 Camry CE, the most basic model, equipped with the standard 2.2 litre 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. Our shopping criteria for this purchase called for a reliable, roomy 4-door that will serve as the main family transport for the next few years of ferrying active teen-agers around. We were also wanting to play it very conservative financially, hoping to spend no more than absolutely necessary and reserve funds for kids' college and home remodeling. Our shopping field quickly narrowed to the Accord LX and the Camry CE, both available in our market for under $18K nicely equipped.
Test driving both, we strongly preferred the Camry for its smoother ride and more silent operation. The CE model preserves the quiet ride and sound construction of the whole Camry lineup, and you don't feel like you've cut corners by not choosing a more expensive model. The CE model with Value Power Package includes power windows, a/c, power steering; add cruise control and you have a Camry that's very nice to own. The standard integrated CD/cassette/AM/FM stereo works very well and has a great sound, very popular with our teenagers on rides to school.
With an excellent service reputation, it's hard to go wrong with any Camry model. If you're value shopping as we were, take a look at an equipped CE model -- it may provide the best value of the entire line.
