One Great Car!

Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great performance, comfort and styling in a surprisingly affordable package.
Cons: Aside from a lack of interior storage, this car is flawless.
The Bottom Line: Great performance, style and quality in a sport sedan for thousands less than anything in its class.

Driving the 2001 Lincoln LS is a pure joy! I own the V-8 with the Optional Sport Package, and have been totally convinced that the Lincoln LS is a viable alternative -- at considerable savings -- to higher priced imports such as the BMW and Lexus.

The styling of the LS is conservative, with a sporty, muscular look. In appearance, it shows that it is a car for serious drivers, looking for superb performance and road holding ability. The near perfect, 50-50 weight distribution keeps this car poised and firmly planted to the road. Throw it around twisting turns, down the interstate or down a country lane, and this car never fails to impress. It just seems 'at home' on any stretch of road.

Seating comfort is excellent. The leather buckets are well tailored, firmly supportive, yet they lack the harsh feel common with most imports. The car is quiet -- with just the noticeable sound of the exhaust providing exhilarating notes on acceleration. The Sport Package includes the optional Select-Shift Transmission, which allows manual shifting for those times when you want to throw through the gears manually.

The audio system -- featuring Alpine speakers, and an 'in-dash' six-CD changer, is excellent. Ford Motor Company has always been knows for the superb quality of its radio-head units, and the FM/AM tuner in the LS does not disappoint. Reception of FM and AM signals is excellent, thanks to the remarkable antenna system that is embedded into the rear window.

Other conveniences include power moonroof, with a 'global open' feature, activated from the remote key fob, that opens the moonroof and all windows for quick cooling when approaching the car. Smart-Lock, prevents the doors from being locked while the key is in the ignition. Driver preferences for seating position, rear view mirrors, steering wheel position can be memorized for two drivers.
The windshield wipers include a unique anti-freezing feature, to keep ice and snow from forming on them during cold weather. This is done through a heating element embedded at the wiper park position on the lower windshield.
The wipers also feature an auto wipe setting, that not only turns them on automatically when it rains, but also adjusts the speed to coincide with your speed and extent of the downpour. That's a nice feature, but one that you must remember to turn off when entering an automatic car wash.

Aside from there being a shortage of interior storage space (the console holds little more than a pair of sunglasses), I have little to complain about with this car. If you buy this car, be prepared to pony up at the pump. The high-output V-8 engine requires PREMIUM gas. One other great feature: Lincoln includes all scheduled service -- from oil changes to brake linings -- for three years or 36,000 miles.
