I bought my 2001 Celica GT in March, 2008 with 75,000 miles on it. I downgraded from the Camaros and Corvettes of my youth with something more economical yet still sportscaresque. This is one of the best cars I've ever owned.
My Celica now has 95,000 miles on it and I've had (0) zero problems with it. None. No false dummy lights, no engine misses, no alignment problems, no transmission noises, no slipping clutch, no rattles, no rust, no nothing.
The pros about this car are many. It handles great on dry pavement and will give you a very spirited ride through the twisties. Be careful on wet pavement though. I spun it around and hit the ditch backwards taking a wet corner at 45mph. I hit hard and didn't even scratch the rear bumper.
I drive 60 miles round trip to work each day and live in NW PA. Our winters are harsh. I put snow tires all around and it does just fine. Nevertheless it IS NOT unforgiving. If you drive with a healthy respect for the weather conditions you'll be fine but if you drive like a nut you're going to end up in the ditch.
I've read many reviews where people knock this car for lack of power but I don't see it. The Celica has plenty of passing power and is actually pretty impressive for a four cylinder. I can light the tires up any time I want. I do have the manual transmission which helps but it is by no means gutless (and this is the 140hp GT I'm talking about). AND.... this is coming from a guy who grew up driving American muscle cars.
My absolute favorite thing about this car is the gas mileage. In the summer I regularly get 42-43 mpg. It actually seems to do better commuting to and from work than it does on the highway. On the highway I usually get 40-41 mpg. In the winter (with the snow and winter tires) it's down to 35 mpg. Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't 35 mpg still GREAT! Yes it is.
The car is small, there's no denying that, but I'm 5'11'' and weigh 180lbs and have adequate space. The storage up front isn't great but I guess it's enough. The trunk is very large.
This is my first Toyota and I couldn't be happier. It runs like a new vehicle and I'm approaching 100k. I plan on putting 200-300k on her if the body holds out.
Oh, in closing I do have to point out one annoying thing about this car. When you're driving down the highway you'll notice that every time you pass a big rig the driver is craning his neck to get a look at the hot chick driving the little Celica. It's almost commical how fast they snap their attention back to the road ahead when they realize it's a man driving!
