Got a 04 4x4 4.7 V8 Quad CAb Sport Plus.
Likes: Love the ride and handling compromise. Feels kind of like a sports sedan in most situations. The ride is taut and well controlled but never harsh or jarring. Surprisingly well engineered ride charecteristics for a 4x4 with 70-series tires. I think the long wheel base allows for a nice stiff suspension without a bone-jarring ride. All ride motions are well controlled and cornering is confident.
Engine: LOVIN that V8. Feels like a jet engine up to about 70-75, when it looses steam. Good low end torque and the 5 speed auto gives quick down shifts on command that bring brute force accelaration up to the 70 mph mark. Best place to have some fun is around 55-60. Floor it and the auto down shifts and the rev-happy 4.7 will fly towards 5000 rpm surprisingly fast, and before you know it it looks like the rest of traffic is standing still.
Transmission: Smooth in easy driving conditions to the point where it can barely be felt, but get on it and it usually gives you what you want instantly unless you go for a long period of time driving gently and then confuse it by suddenly flooring it.
Interior: Backseat is very spacious, as much if not more than most sedans. Couldn't believe they put a am/fm stereo in it that doesn't have a scan function. Front seats could use better head rests and more lumbar support, I hear they fixed that for the 05s. CEnter folding armrest is spacious and can hold alot, and when folded up I've had a 3rd person in there to make total seating for 6 without anybody complaining much. I'm not wanting for space anywhere inside the truck but the seats could be better.
Also, the fully adjustable cupholders are awesome and pretty much guarentee no matter what you put in there it will fit. Truck is very quiet, no squeaks, no rattles.
Dislikes: everything on the front end, from suspension to wheel balance to brakes, seems to be more fragile than it should be in such a tough truck. Already been through a set of rotors, several wheel balances(Seemingly every time I hit a big bump), and Im not sure if they fixed the ball joint issues yet.
Also, fuel economy. I average 14- low 15s in every day short highway trip and city driving, can eek out 18-19 on long road trips. Disappointing for a relatively small truck with a relatively small engine, not far off from what full sized pickups average. If that was the only thing stopping you from getting a full sized truck instead, don't let it. I admit though, it's part my fault as that beautiful engine/transmission combo invites you to work it hard far too often. But I haven't done much better when I've driven gently.
In terms of performance, style, and comfort I give it A ++++. For reliability I'll have to take a wait and see approach though Im not encouraged yet. IT's a shame, it's such a beautiful, fast, smooth riding truck, but it seems like Chrysler skimped on some things and left it up to owners to fix them through the aftermarket. Still a VERY fun truck though, have had it off road and through two feet of water then washed it up and drove it home on the highway smooth as new.
