In case anyone is looking at a 2002 as a used car, I thought my review might be helpful. I purchased my 02 XLS right after 9/11 to take advantage of the low interest rates. Initially I was very happy, as are most new car owners. Since then, I would rate my happiness as almost 7 on a scale of 10.
I have had only one mechanical problem, a DPFE sensor that Ford charged $175 to repair. I later found I could have put it on in 30 seconds for $40, but live and learn.
My big piece of advice on the 2002 is this: There is a problem with the read differential. Most '02 owners hear a whine (sounds like big knobby tires on a 4 x 4) coming from the rear differential between speeds of 45-65 mph. I live with it, but w/ the radio down, it can be annoying. Ford has issued several Technical Service Bulletins on this, but WILL NOT replace it out of warranty. The good news is I do not have a single example that this whine leads to failure. It's simply a major point to consider. If you want to verify this, do an internet search of "2002 Explorer, rear end whine."
Other than that, I have been very satisfied. The engine has adequate power. The finish is good and the ride is solid. I have 73,000 on my '02 and have never replaced the brakes either.
If you can live w/ a potential whining noise, it's a good car. Best of luck!
