This is my third full size GMC vehicle, I usually trade my SUV’s every two years, I just traded in my 1999 GMC SUBURBAN XLT with a 2002 YUKON XL DENALI, before the 1999 GMC Suburban I had 1997 GMC suburban, so I am very familiar with the full size SUVs made by GM. The first thing I noticed after I bought the YUKON XL DENALI, is that it is much quieter to the outside noise, but you hear the engine more, the exhaust system more noisy because it is less restrictive. DENALI has much more power than the other SUVs, 320HP at 5000RPM and 365 pounds of torque at 4000RPM, compare that to the standard YUKON 4X4 that has 285HP at 5200RPM and 325 pounds of torque at 4000RPM. The DENALI is a ½ tone SUV that has a ¾ tone engine and that is excessive power. PROS:1- Power, excellent acceleration, if you are used to be passed by other vehicles at a traffic light, it is not going to happen with DENALI.. 2- Handing, turning a tight corner is basically as if you are driving a much smaller vehicle, effortless and very precise. 3- Braking: unbelievable braking, 4 disk brakes. Dramatically improved braking than the previous versions of full size SUVs. 4- Suspension, much improved, add to that a standard AUTORIDE suspension that automatically adjusts the damping of the struts, which is an $800 feature if you are buying a non-DENALI YUKON. Autoride also automatically levels the vehicle with or without toeing. 5- All-wheel-drive system, there is no need to push any buttons; it is always in all wheel drive, just like other high-end SUVs, such as Lexus ls470 or Toyota “Land Cruiser”. 6- Tires, 17 Michelin Cross Terrain tires, more reliable than other brands. 7- Security, with all-wheel-drive, front and side air bags, and four antilock disk brakes, you feel in control. 8- Comfort: Steering wheel audio controls, automatic headlights, fog lamps, moon-roof (optional), and heated seats, including the second row. Bose radio with in-dash 6 CD changer. Memory driver seat. 9- COMPUTER: you can re-configure the light timer, automatic locks when you put the vehicle in Drive or find out your fuel efficiency on your last trip.
CONS: 1- Gas consumption: This vehicle is rated at 12 in city 16 highway, this is the exact same rating for my 1999 GMC SUBURBAN 4X4 that had a lot less power, but if you compare it to the other YUKNON XL the DEANLI is two miles per gallon short. YUKON XL 1500 4X4 with 5.3 engine rated at 14/16.
2- The gas tank in my previous 1999 Suburban was 44 gallons, this one has 33, that makes a big difference when you drive long distances.
3- The interior volume of the previous version was 11 cubic feet more spacious than the new one.
4- With a 50k price-tag, I would have expected the memory function to include lumbar-support, mirrors and radio stations, it does not.
5- The outside right mirror does not auto-dim at night, my 1999 GMC suburban did.
6- The is no gas cap lock, you have to buy your own.
