I bought my 2002 pontiac sunfire SE In November 2004. I was 18 years old and it was my first time buying a car. I do alot of traveling so all i pretty much knew was i wanted something comfortable and good on gas, as well as reliable. At first i wanted something mid-sized like a ford taurus or a pontiac grand-am. All the mid-sized cars i could find were either too expensive or had too many miles if they were in my price range. So finally a sliver 2002 Pontiac Sunfire SE caught my attention. It wasnt quite as big or as powerful as i wanted, but i decided to take it for a test drive. Upon driving it i found it was suprizingly roomy and comfortable. It also had decent acceleration and hugged the curves of the road well. All the drivers controls were in reach yet my legs were not crammed at all. At 6 feet tall and 205lbs, I never thought i would fit into this little car so well. So after test driving a few others, i finally decided to go with the silver sunfire. I bought it with 32,000 miles on it and a sticker price of $8500. I was able to talk the dealership down to $8,000 through some haggling and i was on my way.
It is now February 2006 and i am still pleased with the car. It now has 47,000 miles on it now and still runs like it did 14,000 miles ago. I also had lots of time to push the car to its limits and see what this car is really like. It's by no means fast, but my no means slow either. The exaust is pretty throaty for a 4 cylinder and sounds good. The top speed is about 108 MPH. It has a tendecy to lean with the curves, but nothing that would be too scary. The electronic traction control pretty much eliminates loss of traction in snow, ice, and rain. The brake pedal is stiff yet responsive... This thing slows down excellently. Overall a very fun car if you like driving.
The main thing that sets this car apart from others like it is the fact that being totally stock, it is fun to drive yet the gas mileage is still amazing. In the city under normal condititons, The car gets about 28 miles per gallon. Under normal condition on the highway its getting 40 miles per gallon! Who can argue with gas mileage like that?
It has had a few very minor problems though. The Blower Resistor went out on me. The blower resistor is a small computer chip type unit that sits under the passanger side dash and controls how hard the air and heat comes out of the vents. It's a $30 dollar part and easy to fix if you are a do it yourselfer. it's pretty costly to repair if you dont like to work on things yourself. Also the driver side power window stopped working. that was about $200 dollars total to have fixed. These simple problems do not leave you stranded on the side of the road and dont require immediate fixing. So me personally, problems like this dont bother me too much.
My overall conclusion with this car is: It's an all around good little car. It is very comfortable, drives well, easy to maintain, and gets great gas mileage. It doesnt do anyone one thing extremely well and seems to have no major flaws. For the low sticker price...what a car! If you are in the market for a compact car, check out the pontiac sunfire!
