Hmm. I was convinced that Toyota was the way to go after everything I'd heard. Looked into the Tundra. After some research (not enough), I decided on it b/c it was THE BENCHMARK for safety in crash tests, and IT WAS A TOYOTA. I bought a 2002 loaded with everything b/c I do quite a lot of driving for work and I also drive with clients in adverse weather (Colorado) alot of the time.
WELL, I'm at 11000 miles now. I loved the truck until the 2000 mile mark. At that point the brakes started shuddering and grabbing. This concerned me as I'd like to be safe, as well as I'd like to have whoever is with me in the truck safe as well. If brakes are grabbing on icy roads they're unsafe, and there have been occasions where I was definitely concerned.
Bottom line. It's been to the dealer 3 times. Toyota won't recall it. This has been ongoing with the Tundra SINCE INCEPTION (i.e. since 2000) and nothing has been done.
After research, it seems to be a problem with the rotors as they are undersized, and they overheat and warp, causing the pads to "grab" in the warped areas and causing the whole truck to shake. I am a conservative driver and I know after having this fixed 3 times that it is a design flaw. Can you say FIRESTONE, or EXPLORER? I really can't believe nothing has been done. I guess it will take someone getting hurt.
After hearing of two other people that have Tundras experiencing even more dramatic shaking than I have, I am convinced that until Toyota puts discs all the way around (like every other 4WD truck in it's market, and like the Sequoia with no brake grab problems), I will not return to this truck. I plan on trading it in on something else and getting my money back via the lemon law.
