Buy the extended warranty no matter what (Reply to this comment)
by bostonanna
I think the author is flat out wrong to think the 4 year warranty will magically fix the reliability problems of the Jetta. I've owned a Jetta for 6 years. It is unreliable and ridiculously expensive to maintain. The only reason I still own it is because it's still under extended warranty, which has saved me over $6000 for those "little quirks." Just because a repair is covered doesn't mean it saves you the inconvenience of being without a car for weeks or months every single year. Also, the problems don't stop at four years - they start multiplying rapidly. I'm very interested in diesels and hybrids but I won't purchase another VW. If any of you do go ahead and buy one do yourself a favor and opt for the extended warranty.

diesel in canada (Reply to this comment)
by soko_34
I am interested into jetta tdi, because of the fuel - milleage ratio. I overheard that diesel engine car will be seling this and maybe next year - 2007 here. and then it will be a few years (2-3) delay before those cars show up again in north america market. let put this way big 3 are not interesting into disel engine for small passanger car, and all of those big oil company - they do not make so much margine selling the diesel. Also golf II - Diesel, has known as one of best selling and endurance cars. talking about 15-18 years of driving in Europe.
My only concern is safty recall on Jettas, in case of the accident, when someone hits jetta from back in the spead there was a big possibility to catch fire, almost instantly. it was on tv too. is this been addressed/fixed?

thank you

Fuel economy vs. emissions (Reply to this comment)
by asafono
However, there's another low emissions technology on the market, one that hasn't seen much attention. It follows the same reasoning that the hybrid vehicles do; lower fuel consumption, and you'll lower emissions.

That's not how it works. If it did, why would the 2002 Jetta TDI be rated 1 on the scale of 0 (worst) to 10 (best) of EPA Air Pollution? (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymake/Volkswagen2002.shtml). Which, by the way, equals between about 44 and 59 pounds of smog-forming
pollution per 15,000 miles, versus about 12.6 pounds for a Corolla of the same vintage (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/best/rating.shtml)

Thanks for the additional info. Perhaps you should write a review too!

Coincidentally, Consumer Reports is not the best source for reliability info. The reason is, they do not do long term reports nearly as frequently as is needed. For example, all of the CR data on the new Golf and Jetta are based on the first examples of the current model... which are 1999 cars. They don't re-evaluate a vehicle until a new model year pops up.

Also, i wonder what your definition of reliability is? VW's have a history for being long-lasting cars. Perhaps you are talking about things like cosmetic issues? Yes, those are important, but they aren't a relaibility issue, especially when you're talking about cars that frequently see over 200,000 miles.

Anyway, thanks for the comment. If you have a review about this car, point me to it!

Nice review! But... (Reply to this comment)
by andrevm
...reliability is a huge issue with VW models made in Mexico. I own a '99 late-model Jetta GLS and que car has put me through a huge lists of "quirks". Most of which were repaired under warranty. What's the use of a 4- or even 10-year warranty, if the car keeps taking you to the dealer? In 3 years, my car has been in service for over 20 days (non-consecutive, by most part). And it's not the only one, as Consumer Reports outlines. As a current owner, I recommend people stay away from the Jetta. The VW Passat is a better bet (made in Germany).

Perhaps the next Jetta model will be worth the expense.

Very well written review.

I think the low-sulfur diesel is due in 2006.

Thanks for the comment! I realluy appreciate it.

I've heard something to the effect that Europe has cleaner diesel than the US.. lower sulphur emissions IIRC. Supposedly, we're getting it over here sometime soon, and several manufacturers are gearing up to ship deisels over in response.

Hopefully, we'll start seeing them in something other than trucks soon!
