He thinks the Audi is no fun to drive.... (Reply to this comment)
by triprey
possibly cuz everytime he drives it, he sees hundreds of other cars on the road that are better built, safer, more reliable, and dare i say it, prettier to look at--for half the price. that would put a damper on my driving experience.

appreciate your review, but respectfully disagree (Reply to this comment)

I've driven the Audi A4 3.0QM no sport and really loved it. However, I really liked your review, especially the pricing and suggestions section. It was detailed and well-written. Good job.

Re: This one was really long!!!! (Reply to this comment)

I believe a magazine review published since I wrote this article (likely C&D) criticized the car for not being much fun to drive. You can also see other comments below that agreed. People often modify these cars heavily. There's a reason for that. Audi has prioritized refinement. Problem is, to my knowledge there is no mod for the steering, which though precise lacked the quick, "alive" quality I prefer. Probably to avoid unintended lane changes on the autobahn.
As for the length, people sometimes complain, but no one is ever specific about what they think should be cut.

This one was really long!!!! (Reply to this comment)

This was the first time someone said that A4 is not much fun to drive. A little surprised there. Also, I found the opinion to be way too long.
Just my 0.02 cents!

Re: Fantastic review, but you missed some sporting potential. (Reply to this comment)

I've gotten a few emails from people recently telling me about the mods to their Audis. The basic car is certainly well designed and solid, I just have trouble understanding why the factory can't quite get to the goal line. Owners of other luxury brands don't seem to modify their cars nearly as often. On the positive side, at least many mods are available.

Fantastic review, but you missed some sporting potential. (Reply to this comment)

I opted for the sport suspension because I felt the standard suspension too soft. Additionally, I opted to replace the sport springs with H&R, the stock sport rims with 18" BBS CH and the stock Primacy tires with Bridgestone SO3's. Additionally, I ordered the 1.8t with modifications in mind. A GIAC chip, H2O injection and a Forge diverter valve. I sound like a hotdog, but I'm not. Total price of car mods under 37K. This car looks great, corners on rails and will hang with a 330xi. With VERY little effort and reasonable $$ I now have a great performance sedan. I agree w/ your opinion of the stock sport setup. The H&R's are progressive so they corner better, lean less but are far more comfortable under normal conditions. Thanks for your review... very informative.

Re: agree to disagree (Reply to this comment)

I've only driven the Mercedes C240, since that's the only one available with a manual. Between these two cars I'd much rather have the Audi.
I believe I even mention the level of refinement in the title. My main criticism of the Audi is that it should be more fun to drive, and you seem to agree.

Re: A4 really better than the CTS in your view? (Reply to this comment)
by mkaresh, in Cars & Motorsports
I guess I have been confusing about the CTS. I would prefer it over the A4, but still hesitate to recommend it over all other alternatives ahead of the upcoming changes to the car.
As for the Contour, I'm still waiting to drive something that I enjoy driving as much in normal driving. Strange, but true. If you can find a 1995-97 Contour SE to drive, you should check it out. It received high praise in the magazines at the time, but generally failed to register in the enthusiast mind.
Thanks for the compliment, by the way.

A4 really better than the CTS in your view? (Reply to this comment)
by Jakeblack
Great writeup, as usual. You should work for Car and Driver.
Just one question, I note you said in this review that you cannot recommend the Cadillac CTS ahead of the A4, yet you rated the CTS 4 stars and gave it a "yes" recommendation - and the Audi only 3 stars and a "no" recommendation?
So honestly, if you had to choose between the A4 and the CTS, would you really pick the A4? I drove in an A4 owned by a friend of mine, I agree it was extremely nice inside, nicer than the CTS, but I think the overall package of the CTS is more fun.

You got me. It made 200 in the A6, but 190 in the A4. This is what happens when you use numbers from memory.

Misinformation... (Reply to this comment)
by spdster2002
Nice review, but you claim that the older A4 with the 2.8-liter V6 produced 200 horsepower. It was really rated at 190. Just thought I'd let you know.
