Opinion Summary
Hyundai’s 2003 Elantra GT - The Cure for Bland Sedan Syndrome
by madtheory | Jun 12 '03
Pros: Excellent price, excellent warranty, nimble sport suspension, a whole bunch of extras come standard.
Cons: The 5th and 6th speakers are teeny-tiny, engine needs more ‘oomph,’ serious depreciation.

those teeny speakers (Reply to this comment)

I just took delivery of a GT last night, I don't feel I have enuf time in the car to do a full review, but I wanted to comment on your criticism of teeny speakers.

Those 5th and 6th speakers, the ones mounted by the door handles, are tweeters. Tweeters are designed to produce the higher frequencies and therefore do not need to be big (actually they can't be big, but I let's not get into the physics). Look at any car that has a '6-speaker' system, the front doors or dash will have 2 much smaller speakers in addition to the mids (those 6" guys, lower in the door). Check out your home speakers too, much smaller tweeters on top.

Fear not, Hyundai did not rip you off with the teeny speakers.

Happy driving!

I was very surprised with the Daewoo I review a while ago and was just as impressed with this little dude as well. There seems to be a lingering doubt about the products coming out of Korea, but this is another example helping to erradicate it. I was impressed with the fit finish, overall feel, even the ride when I pushed it. The stereo was a bit anemic, but such is the case with 90% of the cars these days. Anyway, great review man!

probably THE most interesting car review ever - and i'm not just saying that b/c you're my friend - okay, maybe it is because you're my friend, but it was a good review anyways.

Yeah I saw the Tiburon! Those are bad-a**. I jus couldn't justify buying one; I'm not really a sport car fanatic though. But if I would have seen that Pontiac Vibe or Nissan Morano first, I might have jumped at those.

I agree with your comment. If the Elantra GT would have had a more powerful engine and better speakers, I think I would have upped it to 5 stars. It's that close.

My previous car was a Hyundai as well, and though I only had it for about 3 years, its was the most reliable car I've owned. As long as Hyundai respects their warranty as they have in the past for me, I don't forsee any major problems. Thanks for the comment.

I just recently bought a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon and I couldn't be happier with it. It runs great and I haven't really had any problems with it. Great Review.

Like Toyota and the Corolla S, the Hyundai Elantra GT would have been much more appealing with at good 15% increase in power and some added expressive sound effects; maybe 2005. At any rate, very good car for the money. Though I still question Hyundai's reliability. People tell me all the time about how much Hyundai is improving, and I couldn't agree more, however I was also told this in 1998, and I'm starting to see many '98 Hyundai's develop the same problems that the '86 Excel did, i.e., my friend's 98 Sonata burns a quart of oil every 1,000 miles . Good review. Hope it proves to be a reliable car for you.
