A Great Truck - But Not Trouble-Free

Pros: Attractive, aggressive styling complimented with good performance. Handling is superb for a true truck-based SUV.
Cons: Many annoying rattles and creaks. Could it be (gasp!) that Toyota cut corners on quality?
The Bottom Line: Though the interior quality and craftsmanship does not live up to the brand's reputation, this SUV is still a good overall value given its good on and off-road performance.

I really love my 2003 Toyota 4-Runner Sport Edition V-8. It's aggressive good looks and scoped hood give it a distinct look. And it goes through New England snow, which is why I bought it. It has a lot of neat features included, like the rear drop down window that prove some good thought went into the design. Except for the sun visors, which are very poor. The one that swings to the side is fat and bulky, with an inadequate small flip down under it. But my true complaints are with the numerous build-quality problems. Firstly, the sun-roof rattled like crazy. A constant rattling also comes from the rear, somewhere inside the body panels and I cannot locate the source (possibly connected with the rear window, since it is better with the window rolled down). The drivers side front seat lifts / is not securely in place. The body creaks when backing out of my driveway over uneven terrain. Finally, there is an odor in the compartment when the heat is turned on, which I understand is due to a faulty catalytic converter. Most of these issues are covered by my warranty, though Toyota does not seem to do recalls. Given this track record, I am worried that issues might pop up after 3year/36,000 miles.
