Interestingly enough I had the pleasure of driving a DMC-12 DeLorean. If you've read Blazer Bob's opinion then you know all of the car's options and history - make sure you read the comments though - as they contain some corrections.
To be totally honest with everyone, I was very pleased with the car. I understand that a car made back in 1981 is not supposed to have serious power, but luckily this one did. I understand that DeLoreans come with a 6-cylinder engine - but I did not know that this particular DeLorean had a turbo upgrade installed on it. Now I know what everyone is going to say: "How can you comment on true performance if it's not stock." Therefore, I'm not going to comment on true performance. Let me just mention that this particular turbo upgrade gave the car approximately 300 horsepower. The gentleman that owned the car told me that he had added a twin turbo making an extra ~200 hp.
The handling and drivablity of the car was not so impressive. I could not handle the non-power steering factor. I guess I'm just too used to my 1996 Camaro. The actual ride, however, was relatively smooth. The suspension seemed to handle the roads quite well. I asked the owner if we could take it on some lesser developed roads (i.e. country roads) just to see how the suspension would hold up. He agreed, and so upon venturing onto these roads the car's true self was revealed. The road we had chosen was not seriously undeveloped - it was paved, but the paving was broken up in many areas and had many small bumps. The car took the small bumps ok - but I thought to myself - if I ever went over a speed bump too fast (by accident) I'd be through the roof! I did not expect any less from this car mind you - this is not a biased opinion.
The car's storage room was very limited - which tells me that I could never travel in this car. The seats were actually very comfortable for about an hour and then you began to feel them. (you know what I mean)
One thing that I was not surprised about when we took the car through the city areas was the amount of looks we got from fellow drivers! When we got out of the car to test the raising doors, I saw at least 10 people watching. I live in Sarasota, FL ( land of the old ) and we even got looks from some of the younger groups.
I don't think that I would recommend this car to anyone that is not looking to keep it in the exact condition that it was made in. Too damage the history of such a car would be a shame. This car will forever be remembered for its appearance in Back to the Future - a great movie! I you do purchase one of these cars, I agree with Blazer Bob - don't change it.
In conclusion, the gentleman - whose name was Robert Newman ( I found this funny) - told me he paid 20,000 for the car, 3/4 restored.
