I belong to a fairly new (and fun) website called Little Black Bag. They have loads of new brand name jewelry, handbags, accessories, and more that people can buy and trade to get the perfect deal for them. One brand that they carry a lot of is Betsey Johnson. I love the brand and am constantly impressed by the quality. I chose the Betsey Johnson "In the Navy" Lucite Drop Frontal Statement Necklace for one recent "little black bag" along with a couple of smaller items. This necklace is amazing and certainly makes a BIG statement!

About The Necklace

This necklace is not for the meek or those who prefer dainty jewelry! The chain is gold plated and very bold. It is 16-18" long with a lobster claw clasp and small script printed BJ heart medallion at the top. It has medium sized rings with a thin rope chain going through them and then becomes a triple chain. One is a thin twisted dark antiqued gold color, the other is row is iridescent clear stones that reflect light and the last is a thicker twisted chain with signature Betsey Johnson roses with small rhinestones in the middle. That would be necklace enough but this piece is just getting started.

The statement continues with five tiered teardrop navy blue stones which are actually "imitation resin" - Lucite. They are hard and don't feel cheap or like plastic. Each stone is decorated in a different pattern from floral to striped to polka dotted. The drops are about an inch tall and bold.

My favorite part of the Betsey Johnson "In the Navy" Lucite Drop Frontal Statement Necklace is that there is a very thin chain hanging from the side with a tiny anchor hanging from it. You can remove it but I think it's adorable!

This necklace has graduated blue drops, the longest of which lands mid chest on me. There is an extender so you can make the necklace 16 to 18" long depending on where you clasp it. You may want to experiment with lengths so that it hangs nicely and doesn't sit on your "girls".

The piece is big and bold but not overly heavy.

My Experience

I like funky jewelry but have never worn anything quite like this necklace. It generally costs between $80.00 and $120.00 but I got it for much less which influenced my decision to give it a shot. When I first got it, I was not sure I could pull off such a busy piece. However, once I put it on, it was stunning.

I wear this necklace with a plain top so the patterns of the stones and everything else don't fight with any pattern on my top. It would look cute with a nautical striped top as well but, for me, that would be too much.

The piece has so much going on! The crystals, the roses, the different chains, and the stones all make it a very interesting piece. The little anchor just adds more interest to this unique necklace.

I keep everything else simple. I wear a simple gold chain bracelet and a pair of Betsey Johnson rose studs or very simple gold studs or small hoops. This necklace is a statement all on its own and doesn't even need any other jewelry to accompany it.

I consider this a casual piece but I am sure it would be fine for some formal events. I will wear it when we go to the lake or anywhere by water since it is nautical inspired.

For some, this piece would simply be too big and have too much going on. I generally layer my necklaces but don't with this one. It's a lot of necklace and another layer would detract from it.

It's busy and it's big but you'd be amazed at how great it looks, especially with a simple solid top. This is a well made piece and, with minimal care, will last for years. Betsey Johnson is known for quality and this piece is intricately made and high quality.

The Betsey Johnson brand is sold at high end department stores like Marcy's as well although I don't know if this piece is sold in department stores.

The Verdict

Not for the faint of heart or those that want to blend into the background, the Betsey Johnson "In the Navy" Lucite Drop Frontal Statement Necklace is a statement piece that is perfect for spring and summer with its nautical theme. It has a lot going on but it all works so well together! It's chunky and looks heavy but really isn't. It can be adjusted so that it is shorter or a bit longer and it is the usual high quality that Betsey Johnson is known for. I really like this piece although it isn't an everyday one. 4 stars.
