Cute and likeable movie

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Fun and likeable characters

Cons:None

The Bottom Line: Yes, for a fun and frothy ride

This movie is like a likeable old friend who is always comforting to visit. I liked it back when I first watched it in my 20s, but like it even more in my 30s as a "singleton".

First of all, I want to clear the air about something.  Many people out there make the Bridget Jones character out to be some desperate and pathetic spinster.  However, I think that this is unfair.  I see a woman who first mistakenly blames her unhappiness on her single status.  However, she then learns along the way to seek validation and happiness from within, rather than seeking it from a man.

This paragraph now has a plot spoiler, so please skip the rest of this paragraph if you don't want to know!  Towards the end, Bridget tells Daniel that his half hearted offer to her is "not a good enough offer for me".  She goes on to state the following.  "I can't gamble my whole life on someone who isn't completely sure. You're right that I'm still waiting for something more extraordinary than that". To me, the truly desperate single would have accepted Daniel back, even after all of his bad behavior.  The fact that Bridget didn't indicates to me that she has enough self-respect to not accept just anyone.  It drives me crazy how people continually and conveniently ignore this crucial part of her development in assessing Bridget.

Furthermore, while Bridget has her vulnerability, she also has a certain irreverence that stops her from being a pathetic character.  The movie does, at various points, point out the stigma that singles still face in this society.  Yet it also shows Bridget enjoying a great single life as well.  For instance, I love the scenes where she is out with her friends, just laughing and having a great time with them.  She is hardly a pathetic spinster who just sits home only feeling sorry for herself.  To me, that really captures both the joys and challenges of single life.

The other characters are also equally strong.  Hugh Grant brings a certain rakish charisma to the classic cad role.  Colin Firth initially brings a haughty air to the Mark Darcy character, but then shows a certain dry sense of humor, to show he is not as dull and boring as he first appears.  Bridget's parents also bring a down to earth charm to their particular roles.  I also loved all of Bridget's friends, who were hilarious.  I wish we'd seen more of them.

As for the plot, it is a fresh and modern retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.  It really takes that story and somehow makes it feel brand new again. I don't want to put in too many spoilers, so I will just say that the story has a few surprising twists that will keep the viewer engaged.

I won't really give this a perfect score, because for me, those should be reserved for classic artistic works that stand the test of time.  This is a romantic comedy and doesn't even pretend to be any such "important" movie.  However, I do like it for what it is, which is a fun and fresh comedy.
