I am in sales for a mail/internet/phone order company that specializes in rather expensive equipment for skydiving. A large percentage of our orders ship out via FedEx 2day service. The majority of the time we have no problems and the few times that we do have a problem FedEx is very good about taking care of it.
Generally if you live in or near a major metropolitan area you will receive your package two days after it ships, one day longer if you are Alaska or Hawaii. Shipping within the state of California I've seen packages sent two-day actually arrive at the destination the next day. If you live in a more rural area service might not be as good; it seems that most of our customers who don't get their orders on time live "off the beaten path". Whether this is a problem with the company overall or just the "local" drivers I don't know.
One of the best things about FedEx is their guarantee - if the package is late they will refund the full shipping cost, and they take care of the refund reasonably fast. At our company we always pass that refund on to our customer. Calling FedEx customer service always gets results within 24 hours.
Pricing is reasonable. We are not a large company but we do a fair amount of shipping and FedEx has given us good rates for shipping with them. In most cases we can send an order via FedEx 2 day service for only a couple of dollars more than it would cost to send it via UPS Ground.
Another point in favor of FedEx is their website, www.fedex.com. At this site you can track your package from the time it first goes on the truck until it arrives at your door. The tracking information is detailed and current, unlike UPS's web tracking information which is usually 24 hours old. Be sure to ask the person taking your order at whatever company you are buying from to send you the tracking number when the order ships.
We receive a lot of packages via FedEx 2 day service also. Generally the packages arrive in good shape and on time.
I think that every large company has it's problems, but overall FedEx does a good job for us. They make us feel like our business is important to them through good customer service and good pricing, neither of which UPS cares to provide.
