I just received an item purchased and shipped from the USA to Canada. The item was worth about $24. Cdn and shipping (which I already payed for) was just under $15 Cdn. Before ordering I checked the UPS web site and found a section titled "Rates for Canadian Clearance into Canada" which stated Customs Brokerage Fees of $6.90 for items between $20.01 to $40.00. Although not happy about it it still worked out to be a good deal (so far).

When I received the package they wanted me to pay $24.32 in addition to the pre-paid shipping for all sorts of ridiculous hidden fees. Duties did NOT apply to this item. The total to UPS would be over $39 for a small package worth $24 Cdn.
I called and complained, of course, and told the representative that I felt UPS was ripping me off and misleading consumers. He told me I could have shipped it priority and avoided the fees but I pointed out that it would amount to about the same cost. Huh. I guess they have decided to screw us either way. Why would I spend $39 to ship an item only worth $24? What a rip off.
How come nobody has filed a class action law suit against them? How many other Canadians have been ripped off and not said anything over the years? People like my elderly mother would not know how to begin to complain. It must easily amount to hundreds of millions of dollars, probably on an annual basis.
I'm going to email W5 and CBC next and suggest they do an exposť on this subject.
