Mother Nature has not been very nice to us this past year. We have had hurricanes, tornados, tons of rain, ice storms and snow in October. All these have led to power outages at my home. We had purchased the Chicago Electric Generators 7 HP, EPA/CARB Certified 3050 /3500 Max Watts Gasoline Generator because my son races and we needed a generator that we could take to and from the races. We needed a generator that could power the racing trailer. My husband found the Chicago Generator at Harbor Freight and after checking it out decided that was the generator we needed.

The 3500 Generator measures 17.75” x 23.5” x 19.75” and weighs a little over 100 pounds. It is heavy but with two people we can easily move it. Hubby has mounted the generator to the racing trailer so it would be hard for someone to steal. We can unmount the unit when needed and this year we have needed it to also power up parts of our house. You do need to use the generator outside as the engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide. The 3500 Generator has a nine hour run time at 50% load. When we had to use it for our home we used two tanks of gas a day to run the generator. The tank holds four gallons of gas. The generator has a recoil start with electronic ignition which makes it relatively easy to start. It has two 120 volt household plugs, one 120 volt three prong twist lock plug and one T type 12 volt plug. The 3500 Generator features overload protection, a low oil shutdown sensor and circuit breaker protection.
The 3500 Generator is the perfect size for our racing trailer and has worked in powering up some items in my home. The 3500 Generator is not large enough to power up everything in my house but we are able to put my two refrigerators, two chest freezers, my oven and power up the living room with this generator. Even though it doesn’t power up our whole house, it gets us by when we are out of electricity for long extended periods of time. During the October snow storm we were out of power for five days. We live back in the mountains so we tend to lose power a lot because of all the trees. We are able to cook, keep warm and watch some TV when all our other neighbors are in the dark. The 3500 Generator has really been a life saver. During the October snow many lost everything in the freezers and refrigerators. Since we had the 3500 Generator we did not lose a thing.
I like that the 3500 Generator has numerous plugs to plug into. At the races my husband starts the generator which is hooked directly into the trailer. So it starts the electricity in the trailer turning on the lights and supplying electricity to all the plugs inside the trailer. I then can plug my electric grill and his fan into the generator without any issues. My son also has a tire warmer that we use during spring and fall months which also gets plugged in. If you do put too much stuff onto the generator, you can hear that it is losing power. If this occurs, I just unplug something.
Some may complain about the noise of the 3500 Generator but I don’t think it is that noisy. It’s a generator; it’s going to make noise. I have heard louder generators at the race track so compared to other generators I think it makes about the same noise and sometimes less noise then others.
We purchased the Chicago Electric Generator at Harbor Freight on sale. I don’t recall the exact price we paid for it but it was a little over three hundred dollars. The last time we were in the store I checked the price and the regular price is $450.00. Before we purchased this generator from Harbor Freight we did shop around for the best price for a 3500 Watt generator. This was the best price we had found.
We use our generator a lot from March until November. We use it every weekend to power up the racing trailer. Since owning the generator we have also used it about ten times to power our home during power outages also. This has been a real life saver when we are out of power. It has saved me a lot of money because I was able to hook up my refrigerators and freezers and have never lost anything. It also has given us some sanity during power outages as we still are able to stay at home, cook, sleep and even watch some TV when others on the mountain are sitting in the dark, paying for hotels or staying with others.
We have owned the Chicago Electric Generators 7 HP, EPA/CARB Certified 3050 /3500 Max Watts Gasoline Generator for a few years now and I know I bulked at the price when my husband bought this but I am so glad we own it. Of course it’s nice to have for racing but I love it even more for when we have lost power. To me, it was worth the price just in the few times we have used it during power outages. For us the Electric Generator was well worth the money we spent on it as it has given us many hours of electricity.
In November my husband does a yearly maintenance on the generator which I am not sure what all that entails but we have never had issues with the generator. We just fill the generator with gas and oil, flip the switch and pull the starter and the generator is running. I do find the generator hard to pull but my husband does not have any issues. Once the generator is up and running it keeps running as long as there is fuel in it. You can easily refill the generator even when it is running. The gas cap in on the top of the generator, for easy access.
The Chicago Electric Generators 7 HP, EPA/CARB Certified 3050 /3500 Max Watts Gasoline Generator is durable, starts easily, is easy to maintain and supplies use with electricity when needed. The only thing is if we wanted to power up our whole house we would need a much larger generator but the 3500 gets us by. I would recommend the Chicago Electric Generator to others.
