Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Great story, Great songs, Great for children of all ages
Cons:A little long
The Bottom Line: This one is a classic movie that would be a great addition to any library.
This movie is great fun for kids. It's sort of reminds me a little bit of Mary Poppins, but maybe it's just because Dick Van Dyke is in both movies.

An inventor named Caractacus Potts has trouble making ends meet. He never seems to invent anything worthwhile. At first he tries to sell his invention called Toot Sweets (a candy that makes whistling sounds) to a local candy maker. It looks like he has succeeded at first when all the dogs in the neighborhood come running in the factory because of the whistling sound. His children badly want an old racing car that is about to be sold to someone as junk. They love the car, and their father is able to come up with enough money to buy it. He fixes it up, and go on a drive to the beach with Truly Scrumptious (the daughter of the owner of the local candy maker.) Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (the name of the car) reveals that it can actually fly. Baron Bomburst of Vulgaria kidnaps the car. The baron has made children illegal and Caractacus has to try and rescue the children of Vulgaria.
All the acting in this movie is top notch to me. Dick Van Dyke is wonderful in just about everything he plays, but especially memorable in this as well as Mary Poppins. He does a great job of playing the crazy inventor. Truly Scrumptious is played by Sally Ann Howes, who also does such a fabulous job. The two children are played by Heather Ripley and Adrian Hall. They have a chemistry with Dick Van Dyke and are just absolutely lovable in the rolls that they play. All the characters are well done, and I just love the fantasy in all of them. Here's a list of the main characters and the people who play them:
Dick Van Dyke ... Caractacus Potts
Sally Ann Howes ... Truly Scrumptious
Lionel Jeffries ... Grandpa Potts
Gert Fröbe ... Baron Bomburst (as Gert Frobe)
Anna Quayle ... Baroness Bomburst
Benny Hill ... Toymaker
James Robertson Justice ... Lord Scrumptious
Robert Helpmann ... Child Catcher
Heather Ripley ... Jemima
Adrian Hall ... Jeremy
Barbara Windsor ... Blonde
Davy Kaye ... Admiral
Alexander Doré ... First Spy (as Alexander Dore)
Bernard Spear ... Second Spy
Stanley Unwin ... Chancellor
The movie was made in 1968, but I think it's still a wonderful movie for the children of today. It's a great classic fantasy that everyone can get involved in. It's rated G, so there isn't anything you need to be worried about as far as letting your children watch this movie. It's a little long at 144 minutes, but I bet your children will stay engaged the whole time. Who doesn't love a flying car?
This is a little bit of a musical as is Mary Poppins, and there are some lovely songs in this that are unforgettable. The first truly great one is when Caractacus is trying to sell his candy whistles. They sing a song called Toot Sweets. Another great one is when Caractacus is singing his kids to sleep. He sings them Hushabye Mountain. Of course, then you also have the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang song which is fabulous as well. Here's a list of the songs from the movie:
1. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
2. You Two
3. Toot Sweets
4. Hushabye Mountain
5. Me Ol' Bamboo
6. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (reprise)
7. Truly Scrumptious
8. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (reprise)
9. Lovely Lonely Man
11. Hushabye Mountain (Reprise)
12. The Roses of Success
13. Chu-Chi Face
14. Doll On A Music Box/Truly Scrumptious
15. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Finale)
16. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Main Title)
This is a classic movie, that I feel is overlooked way too many times. I never hear mention of it any more, and I think it needs to be brought back in the light. It's a great wholesome children's movie. Movies like this are hard to come by any more. Your children will fall in love with the characters and the songs as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the parents found themselves enjoying this one just as much as their children. The only downside is that your children will probably drive you nuts singing the songs over and over again because they are so great and catchy! I really recommend that you make this one part of your library!
