Pros: effective, multiple uses, durable
Cons: short warranty
Why I bought the SKLZ Power Wheel Core Strength Trainer?
I have had a couple of abdominal wheels. However, I could tell by the box that this was very different than the simple wheels I have had in the past. I left my most current gym and am buying (or trying to buy) some new equipment. The SKLZ Power Wheel didn’t come cheap. At $65.00 I had to really like this for my home gym to keep it.
About the Power Wheel:
This product is made in China.
Unlike the http:/<a href= the Power Wheel does have chrome.
It was very easy to assemble. In fact assemble is probably too difficult a sounding word. It was just a matter of putting the 22-inch chrome handle bar through the approximate 14-inches in diameter wheel and putting on a bolt and a couple of other metal things that come with this, attatch the the peddle that wasn’t on the handle and voila, it was ready.
The wheel looks like a tire. It looks like rubber with treads but the whole thing is plastic. It is a very strong plastic. This isn’t breaking anytime soon. It has five spokes adding to the tire look.
There are thick foam handle covers for each end of the bar making this super comfortable to use.
There is a 90-day warranty. This isn’t the best warranty to say the least and there is one part of it that, in my opinion, can break and that are the two small round resistance tubes that go between the pedal and the bar.
The pedals, which I will talk about more, measure 7-inches long by 4- inches wide. There are very strong straps attached to each pedal that close with Velcro. I will tell you about this feature momentarily. As you can see this is no ordinary abdominal wheel.
The Power Wheel is intended to work the abdominal area via rolling planks and other exercises that are shown in the instruction manual (and which can also be seen online), the obliques (sides of your waist), chest via pushups, legs via leg curls.
Let’s use it:
The SKLZ Power Wheel is very easy to use and intuitive if you have used exercise equipment. If not I do urge you to read about using it to make sure your form is correct.
I will start with an exercise that has me putting my feet into the straps on the pedals. I put one foot in one loop of the adjustable strap I mentioned above and make sure it is in the middle of the pedal. I then tighten the Velcro. I do the same with the other foot.
Remember I mentioned 5 ½ by 4-inch resistance tubes? These get pulled up over the back of my sneakers and rest on my ankles. It isn’t absolutely necessary to use them. It is really a matter of preference. They are only used in the foot facing up position anyway so if they do break it is not a huge deal.
From here I lie on my back and raise my butt (like a yoga bridge) off the ground. I slowly pull my feet in until the wheel touches my butt and then slowly go back out. I do a couple sets of 15 of these but again this will depend on how you feel.
If you have done something like this with a stability ball, you know that part of the reason it is effective in working your core is because keeping the ball steady isn’t all that easy! The same is true with the Power Wheel. It will wiggle so keeping it steady is half of the battle.
The pedals on the Power Wheel can be taken off (obviously since I put on one) if you want to use this as a traditional abdominal wheel. I don’t find the pedals in my way when I want to use it as such but I guess it will depend on how large your hands are. There are almost 5 inches from the end of the bar to the beginning of the peddle.
Now I will get into a kneeling push up position. I will raise my knees and straighten my legs so I am in a full – what is called – “from toes” – push up position. I am now in a straight line as in a yoga plank position. Slowly I bring my knees in under me and bring in the wheel. There are others but suffice it to say they are explained very well in my booklet.
Jo’s Final Thoughts:
I love the SKLZ Chrome Power Wheel Core Strength Trainer. I would not buy it for someone who has never done a crunch! Other than the first exercise they are a bit advanced and even those with experience will be building up to them, which is great because it means the core is getting stronger. This is definite 5 star product and I usually don’t give “gadgets” 5 stars.
