Pros: Strong, intelligent female leads.
Cons: dialogue tends to get repetitive
Claymore is an anime series that is for the more serious of anime watchers. One of the good things about this series that the story plot continues throughout the series. There are no fillers within like many other anime series. Claymore has the perfect balance of serious conversation and dialogue with a complex storyline of combating demons and other evil forces.
The story begins with the Claymore Clare coming toaide a small village defeat the Yoma who, driven by hunger, have been attacking the village. Claymore, also known as Silver-Eyed Witches, are the only ones who are able to defeat the Yoma. While the Claymore are sought out for their ability to combat the Yoma they are not well accepted and are outcasts. The women have sacrificed their own humanity to have the unique ability. A sacrifice that the humans the Claymore aide do not understand nor appreciate. It is believed that anyone who comes in contact with Yoma are tainted and diseased, thus is the view on the Claymore.
One individual who is force to live as an outcast due to his contact with the Yoma is Raki. Clare allows him to journey with her, but keeps him are arms length. This is where the story begins, with the relationship building and strengthening. There is the usual face paced and epic battles between Clare and the Yoma. As the series progresses and we follow Clare and the other Claymore through their battles with the Yoma, we undertand the meaning behind the sacrifice they made. As well we learn more about the msterious organization that created the Claymore.
Don't mistake Claymore as a soft and gentle anime. The Claymore stories are complelling and touching in a sense. Your heart aches for the sacrifice these women (all Claymore are women) made to protect others. The artwork in this is wonderful with dark backgrounds with eerie lighting making the scenes all the more creepy. The character art is borderline black and white as it is pale to go along with the tone of the series. It makes the show all the more appealing to have it in this state, when the Claymore’s eyes turn gold at a Yoma’s presence makes it all the more dramatic as they stand out against the dark contrasts.
