punkrawker82's Full Review: Turbo Quad 4 (USBX-404) Network Adapter
Sometime last year I was getting tired of using my ball mouse, and at the same time wondered if I could get my USB ports to work. My computer came with onboard USB, so I bought a couple connectors to hook to my motherboard and have USB ports out the back of my PC. Well, after installing them and enabling USB in BIOS, I found out that many people were having trouble with USB on my type of motherboard, and Windows 98se just wouldn't accept it. So I reluctantly decided to buy a USB PCI Card. I saw a couple cards with 2 ports, but then discovered the USB Turbo Quad 4 which had 4 USB ports. I thought, "Hey, if I have to use up one of my PCI slots to get USB to work, I might as well get the card with 4 ports instead of just 2". It also worked out nicely because the 4 port card was the SAME PRICE as the 2 port card. After an easy installation I was happily running my new USB optical mouse and other devices without any problems.
In The Box
---------------
The nice box came with the Card itself packaged in one of those cool anti-static bags, an Installation Guide, and a Registration Card(Why do they make these things??). Installation Guide was great, very detailed and user friendly.
The USB Turbo Quad 4
--------------------------------
This card is great. I was thinking about buying a new motherboard after trying just about everything possible to get USB to work, but the USB Turbo Quad 4 saved me the hassle and money. The performance is outstanding. I've never had a device or the card itself fail, and with no need for drivers or software, you just plug it in and Windows recognizes the USB ports right away. The size of the card is also very important. The fact that is so small gives you more space in your PC for airflow and cables. ADS and Lucent Technologies did a splendid job.
Features
-----------
4 USB Host Controllers on 1 PCI Card
Full 12 Mbps bandwidth per port
48Mbps total USB bandwidth
Integrated dual-speed transceivers(Supports 1.5Mbps and 12Mbps)
PCI 2.1 Compliant
OpenHCI Compliant
USB Rev 1.1 Compliant
Supports 127 devices per port
4 USB Host Controllers on 1 PCI Card
--------------------------------------------------
This is nice because all 4 ports get a full 12Mbps of bandwidth instead of sharing it between 4 devices. This translates to faster, better, more stable performance.
Integrated dual-speed transceivers
---------------------------------------------
I believe this means that if you have a device that was created for use at 1.5Mbps, it will still work. This standard may have been USB 1.0, I'm not quite sure. Anyway, it just assures that all your USB Devices 1.5Mbps or 12Mbps will work fine together or separately.
PCI 2.1 Compliant
------------------------
99% of PC's should be PCI 2.1 Compliant by now, so this just means the card will work for you(unless you have a computer from back in the day).
OpenHCI Compliant and USB Rev 1.1 Compliant
------------------------------------------------------------------
This means the card will work with any USB v1.1 device Universally on PC's and Mac's with great performance, while keeping overall CPU Usage at a minimum.
Supports 127 devices per port
----------------------------------------
If you have enough USB Hubs and need that many devices, then you can have a blast. I'm not sure what happens when you add a 128th device, but I'd rather not find out. I'm happy with 4 ports/devices.
Price
-------
As stated above, buying this card for $20 sure beats paying for a new motherboard. The fact that a 4 port card was the same price as a 2 port card was great too just incase I need more devices.
Conclusion
------------
Buy this card if you don't have enough USB ports or any working USB ports at all. The card is inexpensive and user friendly. It has many great features and saved my computer...
