Re: Who's to blame (Reply to this comment)

I've owned 4 external hard drives.
The Maxtor failed within a one year warranty period, was repaird and then failed again 3 months out of the period. Certainly you can argue it's not a representative sample, but I don't have the bucks to buy dozens of them.
I really don't care who's to blame,as long as the unit didn't fail because of abuse. It didn't. The only other rating I can conceive for this unit is zero, and Epinions won't let me do that.
The three others had a warranty that was triple the Maxtor and are all working. I think at least 2 out of 3 have been in service longer than the Maxtor was. If Maxtor was that good, they would have a longer warranty.
As for store hijinks, I almost always buy my peripherals through the net and have encountered few other problems with peripherals. This was bought through the net, as were the others.

Who's to blame (Reply to this comment)

I think you might be a little unfair to Maxtor. Hard drives, in general, are prone to failing. Some obviously make it longer than others, but I suspect the harddrive is the most common piece of hardware to suddenly crap out on you (maybe second to PSU), due largely to the fact that the disk is actually spinning. I know it's irritating, but I don't think I'd write off Maxtor hard drives forever or give the product a 1/5 rating.
I was in a store one night, and saw some employees moving some hard drives. One was up on a ladder, tossing them to the other. A customer asked the one on the ground a question, and the employee looked away just in time to let a hard drive crash to the floor from about 20 feet. He picked it up and stuffed it in the pile with the others. Any jostle or jolt could drastically reduce the life of your hard drive, and I expect that the product as a whole is worthy of better than 1 star.

Questions for this reviewer (Reply to this comment)
by twirlgrrl
Hi--I had a couple of questions which would make it easier to evaluate your review of this product with other reviews of other hard drives.
1. Is it a noisy drive? Would you keep it on your desk?
2. Is there an on/off switch on the drive, or is it always on when the computer is on?
Thank you for a great review!
