I have two of these now and use them daily. The first one I purchased failed after about three months. Maxtor replaced it with absolutely no hassle shipping a new unit fedex overnight immediately. The replacement was updated to the current production level which does not have an on/off switch on the unit. These units spin down if not being accessed and are constantly "on". They spin up quickly when required and the initial lag is barely noticeable. One of the new units has been in service for twelve months and the other for nine months with no loss of data blocks or media errors. I am running these attached to Mac G4's and iBooks under MacOS 9.2.2 and MacOSX 10.2.2. They plug and play / interchange / with no trouble between systems.
They newer units have no power switch, which seems a little weird but works OK for the best apparently. The drift I got from Maxtor was that the drives last longer if the user lets the drive software decided when to power down and up. It seems to be working out. I have had no trouble at all with the two new design units I have.
I'll probably be needing another drive soon and won't hesitate to purchase a third one of these.
Definitely recommended.
