P4 1.8Ghz or Athlon 1.4Ghz?

Pros: Fast, reliable and it runs smoothly.
Cons: Way overclocked, too expensive, and too early.
The Bottom Line: The bottom line is save your money and instead of a small P4 computer buy a monster Athlon computer for the same price.

The Intel Pentium 4 was I think made to compete with the AMD Athlon chips over 1Ghz. The P4 was rushed into the market at 1.5Ghz+ and so far han't been doing so well.
Why? for two major reasons, number one, its too darn expensive! A P4 1.8Ghz processor costs $600 for one measly chip! A good P4 motherboard for a 1.8 can cost over $150 and the RDRAM is too slow! Overall you end up with an incomplete computer for around $950! For $950 on and AMD based system you can buy a Athlon 1.4Ghz for $250, a nice motherboard for $150, 512Mb of DDR memory for about $150, a 30Gb 7200RPM hard drive for $100, an ATX case for $50, a GeForce2 MX 32Mb for $100, a SBLive! for $100 a CD-ROM drive for $25 and a 3.5" floppy drive for $25! That's $950 flat and all you need is a monitor, keyboard and mouse for an additional $200.
Number 2, speed, here are comparative benchmarks between the P4 and the AMD Athlon...

Notice: the P4 1.6 is slightly faster than the P4 1.7

The Athlon 1Ghz is almost as fast as the P4 1.3Ghz and the Athlon 1.4Ghz is faster than everything except the P4 1.8 and it's almost as fast as the P4 1.8. What does this tell you about AMD compared to Intel? Imagine how fast an AMD Palomino 1.5Ghz (upcoming new AMD chip) will go compared to the P4 2.0Ghz (upcoming Intel chip).
