The card is an SSFDC (Solid State Floppy Disk Card) removable memory card. With a card like this you can record and erase data from Cameras, MP3 Players, Handheld PC’s and more.
A SmartMedia Card is very small and thin. It is about 1/64 of an inch thick, (The Thickness is an estimated guess be me.) 1-¾ inches in length and 1-½ inches wide. Actual Dimensions are 45mm x 37mm x 0.76mm and the Weight is approximately 1.8g.
There is a gold metal like area on the card, this is the contact area with the device for storing and deleting your photos or data. (DO NOT TOUCH THE GOLD AREA.) You will see a little circle in the right center of the card, this is the write-protect area.
To make a SmartMedia memory card read only place a write-protect adhesive seal over the circle. Removing the write-protect adhesive seal will make the card like it was before so you can place data or your photos back on it.
SmartMedia memory cards come with a static-free sleeve and plastic case for storage. Usually included are index labels and write-protect adhesive seals.
Use a little common sense when handling these tiny storage cards, you could damage them if misused.
Storage sizes come in 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128MB. (Megabytes) Each SmartMedia card is marked on what size they are on the outside of the card.
My Cards!
I recently purchased the Olympus Camedia C-3000 Zoom Digital camera and it came with a 8MB card.
I went ahead and purchased an Olympus kit that included a camera bag, 4AA NiMH batteries with charger, a USB SmartMedia Reader/Writer and they included a 16MB SmartMedia card.
I knew the 8MB and 16MB card was not enough for what I wanted on storing photos so I purchased a 128MB card to satisfy my needs.
The 8MB & 16MB Cards!
The 8MB and 16MB cards are the Olympus Camedia SmartMedia cards.
The Olympus Camedia SmartMedia cards have a Panorama function.
The 128MB Card!
The 128MB card is a PNY SmartMedia card and it does not have the Panorama function, which I have no use for. My main idea was more photo storage in the high resolutions.
I purchased the 128MB card for $99 with a $30 mail-in rebate bringing it down to only $69.
PNY SmartMedia cards carry a lifetime warranty.
Storage
Here are some examples of storage and the number of photos from my Olympus Camedia C-3000 Zoom Digital camera. (Other cameras may show different amounts.) All are in the JPEG format.
The 2048x1536 Resolution is in the High Quality Mode and the 1280x960 & 640x480 Resolutions are in the Normal mode of my camera.
8MB SmartMedia Card
2048x1536 Resolution = 10 Photos
1280x960 Resolution = 24 Photos
640x480 Resolution = 81 Photos
16MB SmartMedia Card
2048x1536 Resolution = 21 Photos
1280x960 Resolution = 49 Photos
640x480 Resolution = 165 Photos
128MB SmartMedia Card
2048x1536 Resolution = 169 Photos
1280x960 Resolution = 399 Photos
640x480 Resolution = 999 Photos
As you can see by these there is a big difference in photo storage capacity.
With all three SmartMedia cards I have a total of a 200-photo capacity in the highest resolution. If I needed more photo storage I could always use the 1280x960 Resolution, which produces a good size quality photo and have a total of 470 photos. I think that should be plenty of photos even on an exotic vacation for two weeks.
Overall
They are easy to take out of the camera and place another one in seconds.
The SmartMedia cards seem fast on storage and very reliable, I have had no problems out of any of the three I own.
They are so small that it is no problem to take several with you where ever you go.
