Peteer01's Full Review: SanDisk (SDSM-128-770) (128 MB) SmartMedia Card
I was amazed when I first found out how small smartmedia cards are. Expected to hold capacities of up to 1 GB by the end of this year, smartmedia cards appeal to me for a variety of reasons.
The main reason is their size and weight. Less than half the size of a credit card, there is no problem carrying three cards with my camera to insure that I have enough film. Buying 2 16 MB cards proved cheaper and more effective than buying 1 32 MB card, and gives me more versatility. While compactflash memory is significantly smaller than a PCMCIA card, the size is considerable when considered to smartmedia cards. Coupled with the fact that compactflash memory usually costs the same or more for the same memory capacity, smartmedia seems to be the more intelligent choice.
Another reasons I find smartmedia more attractive is its versatility. Smartmedia cards are currently the standard media for additional memory in MP3 players such as Diamond's Rio 500 or Eiger Labs F20. The interchangability of the smartmedia to take photos or play MP3s makes my investment a bit more versatile.
It may be worth noting that I have a PCMCIA card for transferring files quickly, and I highly recommend that anyone with a laptop and smartmedia purchase.
Admittedly, smartmedia has one large drawback. Cameras designed to utilize up to 8 MB smartmedia will do just that. In order to take advantage of cards with larger memory capacity, your digital device must be capable of supporting it. I purchased an Olympus D-360L camera recently, knowing it's capable of using smartmedia up to 64 MB. If the buyer is aware of and okay with the limitations of the device they are buying, smartmedia seems to preferable to compactflash. I don't expect to need a card capable of containing 64 MB, let alone 128 MB, in the next several years.
While both smartmedia and compactflash memory have advantages and disadvantages, I have found the smartmedia to be a great form of reliable and compact memory.
