That sucks that you lost the photos. Do you normally copy your pictures to the computer after taking them? If not, you should get into the habit, especially just to clear the old ones out. Then burn them to a CD.
One thing I learned many years ago is not to trust a computer with one copy of anything important. I email myself copies of stuff and zip it and upload to my website, thus giving me 3 copies for things I would never want to lose.
