| WRC123's Full Review: Sony Micro Vault USB Storage Media (64 MB) (USM-64... |
I had a "no name" USB thumbdrive for awhile, USB 1.1, with only 32 megs of memory. I decided to upgrade to a newer, and (I thought) better Sony thumbdrive.
The drive worked well for awhile- transfer speeds were acceptable for USB 2.0.
Some software was included with the MicroVault- none of it worked well at all. Just looking at the primitive installer, one could tell that this was poorly made software. I installed and tried the security-zone and compression software, and neither worked properly.
First, USB 2.0 should be able to operate in a 1.1 hub at a reduced speed. The drive did, originally, but shortly before it failed it began to not work correctly- it would not be recognized properly in the computer. I messed around with Windows XP's hardware settings to no avail. I looked for help on Sony's web site- that in itself was a joke. The "help site" was filled with useless and unhelpful information that didn't com close to solving these problems. I also attempted to call Sony support- that was another joke. I thought this was a USB 1.1 problem, but when it failed to be recognized on multiple USB 2.0 computers, I knew something was shot. It ended up working for about three weeks. When I threw it out, I noticed that, despite the unique and pretty housing, it was made of very chinsy, weak plastic. Not barely as durable as one might think.
Fortunately, I did not have any critical data on the MicroVault. If someone did, and this happened, they could be in a world of hurt. I'm very disappointed with Sony, for making a product with poor software, poor durability, and poor reliability. This slow, delayed failure is the critical blow to this product.
Sony has a great reputation. However, after experiencing this product and their VCR (see other review) I'm starting to change my view of this company.
