| PhilipSullivan's Full Review: Apple iMac DV Indigo 15 in. (M7639LL/A) Mac Deskto... |
I had spent the past 12 years or so using PCs at work, working with figures so that spreadsheets and word processing packages were the order of the day. No internet access was allowed and I couldn’t use any of the multimedia aspects of the machines as that might disturb people or even give the impression I wasn’t working! I felt I wasn’t using the computers to their full potential, so I decided to buy a home computer and have some fun. But what to buy?
As I said we only used PCs at work, but I wasn’t keen to get one at home because from experience I knew they could be unreliable and as all PCs are slightly different a fix for one machine would not necessarily work for another. So I decided to get an iMac. No one else I knew had one but I liked the thought of trying something new. This then, is what I found.
The iMac is compact and colourful, in contrast to most PC’s whose monitor, speakers, and cpu box would have taken up all my available desk space.
Switch it on for the first time and within a few easy steps you’re on the internet. It also has built in help which takes you through from the very basics of using a mouse through to how on increase the RAM available on your machine. You also have 90 days telephone support in case you find looking through all the help too daunting when you first start
It comes with some very good software too. Appleworks, which combines word processing, spreadsheets, databases, painting and drawing as well as presentations. It also comes with web editing tools, graphic packages, games, a movie editor and depending what package you were offered with your purchase, an encyclopaedia too. The list is not exhaustive but there are not many things that aren’t available for you do do straight away on an iMac.
As someone who was used to a PC I found no problems getting to know and love the machine and unlike a PC you don’t have to be a ‘techie’ to become quite an expert on it. Within a short while you can network and set up multiple users, something that would normally be left to more experienced people in the windows world. I would certainly recommend it to first time users of computers.
