| rainbow712's Full Review: Apple iMac DV Indigo 15 in. (M7639LL/A) Mac Deskto... |
Now that I have used the iMac DV for 8 months I can recommend it highly. What sets it above other computers is its lack of a fan, which makes it much more quiet, and its ease of use. The noisiest component is the CD/DVD drive which occasionally turns too fast.
The DVD drive is a plus, but unfortunately because of the size of the screen it's hard to watch a movie with lots of dark scenes. The image is so dark that it's sometimes hard to see what's happening. On the other hand, the image is more clear during outdoor scenes and you can appreciate the excellent image quality. There are occasionally synchronization problems which can easily be corrected by hitting the space bar.
As for the Harman Kardon speakers, I can't enjoy them because I wear headphones most of the time. I do this because the volume is far too loud, even at the minimum setting. I have no problem using the small round mouse: it's just a matter of getting used to it. The keyboard is nice, small enough to fit on any surface. The omission of a floppy drive should have been compensated by another kind of backup drive.
Some gamers have complained about the graphic card but I have no problem running all games, including Unreal Tournament and Quake3. Of course I have never tried a better card, but I'm quite satisfied with the performance.
The modem is NOT a quality modem! Constant disconnections are not a sign of quality, and I know that it's the modem's fault because I have a new one and the problem is now solved. The iMac came with Mac OS 8.6 and the Mac OS is of course the main reason for choosing an iMac. I use Windows from time to time and there's no comparison possible: the Mac OS is definitely superior. The computer also comes with bundled software, ranging from useful to useless, depending on the kind of software you like.
Finally the computer is fast enough to do everything I need. This is a big improvement over my Performa 580 and I really enjoy it. One last thing: 64 Mb of RAM is not enough and 128 Mb should be the minimum.
Despite some flaws, especially the modem, the iMac DV is a great machine. It can do whatever you need to do, from demanding programs to high end games (for now at least). The hard drive is big enough to store most of your files. And best of all, after you finish working or playing, you can watch a movie without being annoyed by a fan. It's great!
