Pros: Low price. Decent memory. Expandability. Perfect for surfing.
Cons: Not as fast as some.
The Bottom Line: Even though it's not made anymore, this is a good machine and would be a good used computer, if someone is selling one.

| tranceboy's Full Review: Compaq Presario 5460 (152508-004) PC Desktop |
Aside from an old Radio Shack Model 100 purchased in the dark ages of 1983, this is the first modern desktop computer I have owned. I am a professional journalist and have worked on computers for more than 20 years. For a home machine, I have few complaints about the Compaq 5460. I obtained it for less than $1,000 at a Circuit City in October 1999 when it was among the faster selling cheap computers, having just been touted by Walter Mossberg in his Wall Street Journal column. Its processor speed is fast enough for anything I use it for. I connect through AOL, so my connection speed is determined by my phone line and AOL. I've never tried this machine on a cable modem or other high-speed link. The keyboard, while well designed, broke after a few weeks. The space bar went. Compaq sent a free replacment after several calls. It crashes sometimes, but so do all computers. The sleep feature can sometimes be quirky, in not working. I use the CD-rom constantly to play music CDs and have had no trouble. I've never used the built-in Zip drive. It has space for a cd-writer. And the RAM capacity is expandable, as is the hard drive. The unit is now almost 1 1/2 years old and showing no signs of age. I couple it with a Diamondtron Mitsubishi 17 inch monitor and Cambridge Soundworks speakers, an HP printer and an HP scanner. I spend at least 4-6 hours a night on the machine and have never regretted its purchase. I don't think it's even made anymore by Compaq. I would not hesitate to buy another Compaq.
