This past April, I found myself in the market for a new computer. My old one was slow, forever giving me error readings and finally just died. So off I went to Office Max looking for a new computer. After a long debate on what I actually needed and what I really wanted, I chose the COMPAQ PRESARIO 5724 .
I use my computer from surfing for homework for the children, regular chat, voice chatting, and writing on Epinions. The Compaq Presario 5724 fit my needs completely plus it has many of the nice extras. It comes with 96MB ram, 56 K v.90 Modem, 6x CD/DVD drive (great for watching movies), 12 gig hard drive, a 100MB zip drive (means added storage for family pictures), 3.5” floppy drive with soundblaster, Intel Celeron 500MHz chip processor (for speed when surfing the net), 2 expansion slots, and 4 ports with gaming ports located on the front for convenience. It also comes with an Internet mouse and Internet keyboard, so everything is just a button push away.
Several reasons I like this computer is the speed when loading items from the net. This comes in handy when researching items for my children’s term papers. The zip drive is another wonderful feature, instead of having 15 floppy disk laying around all the pictures I mail to out of state family and friends, they- are on one disk. But I think the best feature for me (being computer illiterate) is the nice quick restore feature. If I mess something up or lose a drive or certain critical information, three quick clicks and it is restored without dumping the entire hard drive. The Presario is quick to set up and that it comes fully loaded which is another nice feature for someone just starting out with a computer.
There is a couple of drawbacks that I have noticed. One is the tower is quite large and rather heavy. I have to have help moving it. Another thing is that it tends to freeze up often and offer error warnings. After contacting Tech Support, most of this has been corrected.
The Compaq Tech Support, I have found to be friendly, useful and know how to explain things to someone who has no clue what they are doing. The Compaq comes with a 90-day on site service, which they do honor , no matter where you live. I live about 60 miles from any major city and when lost my modem about two weeks after getting the computer, they had someone here the next day to replace it.
Words of advice though, when purchasing the extended warranty, do it directly through COMPAQ. I have found out that if you purchase it from the place you bought your computer, it isn’t on site repaired. I purchased my Compaq at Office Max and if I have any problems in the next three years, I have to drive 60 miles one way to have it fixed by a Compaq serviceman. If I had bought the 3 year extended plan through Compaq, they would have continued to make on site repairs for the duration of te warranty.
If you are a looking for your first computer or a seasoned veteran, the Compaq Presario 5724 is a good choice.
