When I started to look at the new computers on the market, I first looked at Compaq. I had owned one for several years (and still do) with few problems. The large insurance company I work for uses Compaq as their computer of choice for desktop work stations.
The Compaq Presario 5724 is equipped with the features I was looking for at a price I could afford. The basic configuration of the 5724 is:
6x DVD drive, a 100MB Zip Drive, 4 USB ports, floppy drive, 96MB RAM, Intel Celeron 500MHz chip, internet keyboard and internet mouse, 2 expansion slots, 56k modem and, a 12 gig hard drive.
This model Compaq is large and quite heavy, but anyone shouldn't have trouble setting it up. And speaking of setup their directions were great. I think it took me around 20 minutes and I was up and running including the time necessary to take it out of the box and connect the phone line.
This is probably one of the the best value-performance PC on the market today and the Celeron processor is quick as needed for internet access.
Its been 4 months after I bought the Presario 5724, it has crashed a few times, and sometimes the monitor doesn't want to wake up also causing me to reboot. I have read another one of the epinions and they had some of the same problems. There are probably fixes out there for some of these situations.
A WARNING!!! These newer models require JBL Pro speakers that are amplified. These speakers come with their new monitors but my old ones from my other Compaq wouldn't work.
