| retroguyndc's Full Review: Compaq Presario 7598 (173954-003) PC Desktop |
I'm updating this review because it was sloppy the first time around. My cat was asleep on my lap, effectively making typing a pain.
Having had a Presario 5340 since it was new (1999) I knew to expect good things from a Compaq! The 5340 has been flawless since I bought it.
When I saw this Presario 7598 on Ebay for $20 I had to buy it. I'm something of a computer nut, and I own many computers. The 7598 is a great machine! I have to say I am very pleased!
The Presario 7598 is Loaded from Compaq with a DVD drive, and CD Burner, a fast 600Mhz Pentium 3, 128 mb SDram, 56K modem, and a good quality Intel motherboard, it runs Microsofts Windows 98SE, and it runs it well. This machine in it's original form is as fast running as my newest computer(3.06 Ghz/1gbDDR)is at running Windows XP Pro.
Now, since the Presario 7598 is no longer available new, I thought I would tell everyone about mine, and recommend it for anyone thinking of buying used.
As I said before, it's still working with the original factory setup. After adding all the updates from Windows Update, I added Norton Internet Security 2005, and started putting it through the paces. Even using the factory modem, the internet was fast enough that I wasn't immediately itching to use broadband. The CD burner, and original CD writing software worked well, and rather quickly, I have to say. Just for laughs, while scrolling through the original Compaq programs, I clicked on one called "Built in Technician". It had an option to "chat with tech support online" I chose this option, thinking that the system was too outdated for this to actually happen. Norton kicked in here, asking if I'd allow Built in Technician access; to my suprise, as soon as I allowed it access, I was online with a live person. (At this point, having had not a single problem with the 7598, AND knowing I could have solved it on my own if I had, I sort of had to lie to the guy, make up a problem, and ask his opinion.) Long story short, he gave me the correct solution to my made up problem, and, had it been necessary, he could have remotely connected to my machine, and fixed it himself. And...this cost me what? NOT A DIME! Pretty cool, I thought, having bought the 6 year old computer off Ebay for $20!! It's probably also important that I mention this...The Presario 7598 is still fully supported on Compaq.com. You can download everything Compaq put out for it from day 1! Also quite cool!
I guess what is possibly most important to anyone thinking of buying a used 7598, as I did, in it's original form, it can handle Windows XP. Adding ram would probably be a good idea, but it wouldn't be necessary. Like I said though, it's as fast in its original form as my newest 3.06ghz PC so I like it as is just fine! Hope this helps anyone that may be looking for a used system! Once again, I give it an A+!!! Of all the computers I currently own, this Presario has become my favorite. I'm on it now! :o)
